Anyone find it somewhat odd that Dubai is probably the most fanatic about religious law, and yet is the only country in the ME not blowing people up on a daily basis?
And no, I am not suggesting anything about religious fanaticism, just kinda occurred to me today.
People need to stop going to Dubai, fucking let them sink until they get it into their heads that's not how to make tourism work.
Bahrain is where it's at anyway, ethiopian women all over the place dtf. from what i hear anyway
They are hardly the most fanatic, you only hear about it because the UAE is large and wealthy and therefore has a lot of westerners around.
If you honestly don't get why it's tolerated by other countries, you are not a student of history.
I'm not a student of history, so explain away.
3 letter word, rhymes with foil.
Wait, shit.
Spoiler: show
You didn't even try to make it sound exciting :<
I'd read this story yesterday, this article doesn't seem to mention that she was released to the Norwegian consulate after a few days of jail.
She's probably safe from that jail sentence, now. Can't quite imagine Norway betraying a citizen to keep "good" diplomatic relations with the UAE (in before someone calls me naïve and mentions the oil flowing).
Still, she's been raped and her rapist will never face justice.
Fuck theocracy in all its forms.
The article does mention she was fired, for allegedly consuming alcohol and embarrassing the company as a direct result.
Her rapist was fired as well, but yeah...
On the other hand, the company, Al Mana Interiors, isn't Swedish at all, it's based in Qatar and owned by a Qatari man, Wissa Al Mana.
He's Janet Jackson's husband, apparently.
The article I read on Huff Post said the guy was sentenced to 13 months. They were both fired for engaging in illegal activity while on the job and making the company look bad. I don't understand the outrage about the company. It is exactly what a corporation in that area would be expected to do; Distance themselves from the bad press.

Here is the excerpt:
Norwegian diplomats later secured her release and she has been allowed to remain at the Norwegian Seamen's Center in central Dubai. She said her alleged attacker received a 13-month sentence for out-of-wedlock sex and alcohol consumption.
It is a Swedish company called "The Ones Home Interior". Al Mana Interiors is the middle-eastern franchise of The Ones.
What I can't understand is where she works. She was on a work trip to Dubai, does she work in one of the stores in the Middle East or in Scandinavia? I assume she works somewhere in the Middle East, considering the franchise gave her the letter of resignation and not the Scandinavian chain.
