Sega Sammy acquires Index (Atlus) Fuck You Sega. Fuck You.

I guess the biggest loss are the games that Atlus made or published not called Shin Megami Tensei in one form or another. We will never get another Radiant Historia or Catherine, and without Atlus USA around it will be up to Capcom of all publishers (or, if we're extremely lucky, XSEED or NISA) to bring us quirkly titles like Code of Princess.

Another possibility (if I'm allowed to be optimistic) is that Atlus USA survives the purchase and takes over the localization/marketing/PR for the niche games they always have, as they're better at it and probably run a lot less of an opportunity cost to do so than Sega of America. Kurohyo coming soon to PSN for Vita, localized by Atlus.

Notice is hereby given that Sega Dream Corporation, which was newly established as a wholly owned subsidiary by Sega Corporation (‘Sega’), a subsidiary of Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. (the ‘Company’), has concluded a business transfer agreement with Index Corporation (‘Index’) for the purpose of revitalization of the business. Atlus is pretty profitable. Index was under a shadow of a corruption investigation and had pretty big debts.
Atlus USA is definitely a better run outfit than Sega of America, but that's up to Sega Sammy to figure out for themselves.

There's a middle-case scenario where Persona and SMT games continue to make it to the west, and it's not likely SEGA bought Atlus, a brand with a lot of western cred, simply to dismantle it for shitty pachislot/mobile refuse. You will still get Persona V and whatever's next for SMT. SEGA did leave well enough alone with the PC dev acquisitions in the last two-ish years.

When Sega acquired Index Corporation, the parent company of Atlus, the deal was done under a new subsidiary called Sega Dream Corporation. Instead of using that company name, they’re changing the name of Sega Dream Corporation to… Index Corporation. So, basically Index Corporation is just a subsidiary of Sega Sammy instead of it being part of Sega Dream Corporation.

The more important question is who is in charge of Index Corporation now that it’s integrated into Sega? Sega Sammy Chief Operating Officer Naoya Tsurumi is now the president of Index Corporation and Yasuhiko Hamada is the Executive Vice President.

Yukimasa Murakami, the Managing Director of Index Corporation before the acquisition, is still the managing director of the new Index Corporation.

Yakuza creator Toshirio Nagoshi, Sega game director Yukio Sugino, and Atlus USA president Naoto Hiraoka are on the company’s board.

Honestly I'm still a little upset that Nintendo didn't buy Index because the tears over SMT/Persona being properties of Nintendo would have been glorious.
