No, plex does this just fine.

To add to it, Plex is an amazing program and worth every penny (If you are like me anyways). Most of it works fine with the free version, but there is nothing better than being able to go to a friends house, and chromecast from your home PC, to his chromecast at his house. It's like having your full library with you no matter where you go. Makes your library look good, as it is great at figuring out what movie/TV show it is by name, and adds clipart, etc without you having to do anything.

I keep forgetting about plex's web app being free as well (shows how much I make use of plex), and thread is tl;dr at this point.

There's a good few websites that work with chromecast in the same way their associated apps do, like some sports streaming sites. My brother does that a lot using his laptop to watch NBA games on a TV using our timewarner login info when he's out of town.

Got a chromecast today to stream from my computer to my TV since I'm moving next week and I won't be able to have it hooked via an HDMI cable like I do right now.

I though it was going to be a painless Plug & Play kind of thing but it's proving to be anything but that, I want to stream mainly anime, which means subtitles, but I can't get them to display like they do on PC no matter what I try and it's starting to get aggravating. Plex is... well, it suddenly closes for no reason and then refuses to work at all until I reboot the computer or windows session, it feels very wonky overall, I can't get to stream anything to chromecast.

Then I tried the Serviio/bubbleupnp combo to stream to chromecast, while it seems to work somewhat, subtitles do not work with it, it can extract and display dome of them without any style and no outline, which makes them hard to read, but not all.

Then there is the "videostream for chromecast" chrome app/extension, it's the simplest one to use and works with everything, but it has a "minor" issue, again with subtitles, it can display them, with their intended style like it does on a PC, but for somereason some of them are McFucking Huge size for no apparent reason, they retain their font/style but are like 3-4 times bigger than they should be, there are options to resize them, but of course they're behind a paywall (and not a cheap one, $35 for a lifetime sub).

There has to be something that can stream video (mkv with styled .ass subs) without it being such a huge pain in the ass, I only bought chromecast for than and I'm starting to regret it. are there any other options?

I bought one yesterday and steam with subs np

I just stream from my Ipad to chromecast, then got in menu and activate subtitles

I can stream from my phone with subs too, the downside is the screen has to be on (it sends what's on the screen after all) and it sucks the battery dry in a very short time, plus I can't access my hard drive that way.

EDIT: I tried everything I found on the net to no avail, is there really no way to stream a MKV with styled subs from your PC to chromecast?

Rata, could you post how do you stream fro your iPad to chromecast? 'cause besides streaming the whole phone screen to chromecast which kills your battery, I haven't found anything that works with subs.

I'm pretty sure Plex supports subtitles. That's what I use for my media collection streaming.

Videostream also works well for streaming whatever video files you have on your PC.

Plex would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that adding anything to the library breaks it, it adds some media then stops but stills shows as if it was working, if I mouseover the icon in the tray it disappears and a message of "Username went away" shows up. I have to go to the task manager and kill it, restart and resync it, do that several times till it gets my collection.

Sometimes it also does this during a cast, it simply shuts down for no reason, I want tom fast forward and bam, it's gone, making it useless.

No clue wtf you guys are doing to make plex act that way.... I have three different media servers for my home, all using plex. I've never had any problems showing subtitles, you just have to pick it before playing the movie/show, and i watch a lot of anime, so i use the fuck out of that. MKV files is the main file format i use as well. I've never had it break when updating new media, and I use it almost everyday at work, streaming through the webpage. I also use it to stream my workout stuff to my basement TV (I have 4 chromecasts now, not sure how i lived without the fucker).

I don't know, Plex does exactly what I want, but it closes for absolutely no reason, no error shows up, the media server just straight up closes for no reason...

Never had an issue with Plex and chromecast before either. Maybe try reinstalling it?

Already did, twice.

Looked through the logs to see what's going on, the only thing that points to an error is the Plex DLNA Server log

That's what shows up in the log, as you can see, it streams fine for several seconds and then it dies.. The other ones don't show anything weird, they just suddenly stop. I don't know what that means, maybe I should post it on the Plex's forum and see what they have to say.

I think their forums might help you out. It doesn't lessen your frustration, but it really shouldn't be doing that and if you can get it cleared up you'll be in really good shape.
