Things were worse around the turn of the century during the age of unregulated capitalism and they didn't even have the interwebs!

Trouble is, a mouthpiece becomes a target. Consider Assange, Wikileaks was in a better position before he stepped in front of the curtain.

In 1975, students at Stanford University held an election[15][16] to choose a mascot for the athletic teams and voted for Robber Barons.[17] The university's administration refused to implement the vote, and the teams remain without an official mascot, instead being referred to as the Cardinal.

A mouthpiece also has the chance to be an hero. You mean to tell me no one wants to be remembered throughout history for championing a cause that either succeeds or end in an assassination? I doubt it. There are already academics out there putting skin in the game on their pet projects against good sense and their own personal safety. Some even become social pariahs but when you feel strongly enough about something that's a simple step towards the objective.

Or you can simply choose to work behind the shadows but people tend to like rallying around an individual rather than an idea even if the individual is simply the human vessel for an idea.

Yea, I'm so useless. I'm trying to get into medicine so I can help people and do more for the world. What a useless chap I am for not wanting to jeopardize my ability to help thousands of people in the future so that I can stand on a soapbox and have nobody listen to me.

There's a difference between being motivated to help and being literally unable to.

Saying that your job is tying you to the ground is one thing - saying that you can't promote change because of it is another.

    Fuck sake, people.

How does you studying medicine help stop corporations from manipulating commodity markets?

I don't think anyone's trying to imply anything about your value as a person, but neither you or anyone else around here is likely to have any effect on the topic at hand.

It doesn't, but it puts me in a position to help people directly. Other than that, you're probably right. I was responding to his saying I must be of no value.
