It's probably based in logic and some knowledge of programming, but from my memory, SE has said repeatedly that the issue is the PS2 doesn't have the memory to load more than 160 items at once, which is what happens when you have both inventory and something else open to move stuff around.
Edit: We're also dealing with legacy code that originated FIFTEEN years ago at this point for a PS2, ported to a PC, ported to Xbox.....
Half the time I'm surprised the game boots up.
