The same way we root for Tony Soprano, or any other villain protagonist.

Using morality as a basis to determine likability in fictional characters is pretty flimsy.

This is also assuming that people can differentiate between "likability as a character" and "personal likability".

How would his life have been much worse? He was as low grade of a drug dealer as they come, I really doubt he could have kept up that life style for very long given his lack of connections to people that actually matter. Most likely he'd have lived the same life as his friends.

My theory

Obviously Hank and Gomey aren't making it out of this. They'll get shot, Jesse'll run away. They'll ask Walt to cook for them since that was their deal. Walt will be distraught over the death of Hank. They'll capture Walt and throw him in the bunker and try to force him to cook. Walt will escape. Six months time lapse, we catch up to Walter as he's on the run from the Aryans. This is why he needed the M60. During this time media has picked up on the Heisenberg story. This is why the neighbor had such a shocked reaction to him being at his house and why Heisenberg was a household name spraypainted on the walls of the house by the kids who were squatting there. Beyond that, I got no clue.

He was also using back then and banging crack heads at hotels. Sounds like he was on a real path to redemption. He lost everything on his own and only got his house back cuz walt came correct.

He didn't start binge using til after crazy 8 and his cousin where both murdered by Walt, one in his own house. I'm not saying he would have been runner up for Mayor or that he would have made anything of his life, but I don't see how you can honestly think Walt has been anything less than poison to Jesse.

I really hope Gilligan and the writers don't do a "x amount of time later" deal. The show has been consistent thus far-- I think a time lapse would take away from the continuity and resolution of plot. Other then that, I could see your prediction going through, but it seems a bit too predictable for this show.
