It is kinda cool to see Rise (hopefully eventually maybe possibly sometime Fuuka) be playable, since I always felt their Persona's had some of the coolest designs.

Interested to see how much Ken has grown up, and he was on my "please add" list since this was announced. So yay.

Atlus has to know everyone wants to see Adachi, so they're purposely holding out. It's like Sakurai-lite.

The Completely Metamorphosed Idol / The Completely Perverted Idol

Following up on our previous coverage of Persona 4 Arena support character Rise Kujikawa joining the fray as a proper fighter in the upcoming sequel Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, the latest issue of Famitsu provides a handful of new details on what to expect in terms of story beats and overall fighting style.

Rise’s story begins with her getting to work on making her comeback as an idol by attending lessons. When the red fog shows up Inaba one night, though, people start disappearing and Rise finds herself separated from her friends. Faced with recent danger, Rise awakens to a newfound resolve, and with her Persona Himiko in turn gaining a battle-ready form in the process. Her unique cheeky fighter title is written to literally be “Kanzen Hentai Super Idol.” Although it’s difficult to translate well because of its multifaceted nature that plays upon both her Shadow’s tendencies as well as her general growth as a character, it can humorously be translated literally to mean both “The Completely Metamorphosed Idol” and “The Completely Perverted Idol.”

In terms of combat, Rise utilizes a microphone as her weapon of choice, with her battle style described as “restrictive musical notes.” As such, her special attacks include things such as explosive musical notes, as well as an array of projectiles. In line with her previous support role, she can still analyze her opponents, which changes up her attacks in some manner and enables players to craft their own unique fighting styles when playing as her. Additionally, like every other character in the game, Rise also has her own one-hit KO move called “True Story,” in reference to the song she sings in Persona 4 The Animation and Persona 4 Golden, in which she alluringly sings to her opponent to take them out once and for all.

As with most of the cast, Rise also has a Shadow form that players can choose to play. It once again takes shape as her idol self, Risette, although the reasoning behind its reappearance has yet to be illuminated. Shadow Rise has unique lines and actions that she can perform during the game, such as bringing up the title card used to herald Rise’s dungeon in the original Persona 4 as a fighter introduction before combat commences.

The Famitsu article also shares brief details on how story mode will work this time around. Rather than have paths dedicated to every character that appears in the game, the storyline will be split into two branches, “Episode P3″ and “Episode P4,” depicting plot developments from the perspectives of each game’s respective cast members.

Finally, here’s a look at the Golden Arena Mode, a new battle tournament mode that incorporates RPG elements like levels, skills, customization, and Social Links.

Her DP looks like a new thing. Looks like a counter, but Narukami didn't do anything and got hit anyway. Looks like it just hits when you're close to her?

The button she puts out @0:41 when Naoto is getting hit by the orbs looks like a standing low, that's another thing I don't think anyone else has. And she gets a 5th persona card while the orbs are up?

Golden Arena Mode explained

Golden Arena Mode is a new mode that players can enjoy in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax as of version 1.10, selectable from the mode selection menu. In it, players take a fighter and journey down to the deepest floor of a dungeon in the hopes of taking down the boss that awaits them. As they make their way further and further down, players will raise their selected character as they like, as well as engage in Social Links with their navigator partner.

Characters in Golden Arena Mode cannot take their acquired skills in other modes or use them in versus matches.
Players without a Nesica card can play, but their levels and progress won’t be saved. [Nesica cards are used with arcade games in Japan that are distributed by Nesica as a means of saving player data across machines. For Persona 4 Arena, this has predominantly been limited to things such as custom fighter titles and unlocked color palettes.]
Golden Arena Mode can be played for either a set period of time or until 20 floors are cleared. [Screenshots indicate that at least on Normal difficulty level, there are 50 floors per dungeon. Ultimate level is unique, the reasons for which are explained below.]

Leveling Up

Experience points in Golden Arena Mode are gained by defeating opponents as they appear in matches. Naturally, once you accumulate a fixed amount of experience points, you’ll level up, enabling your character to get stronger! You can freely decide how your character will grow, allowing you to mold them as you please. [Status parameters that can be leveled up are, in order from top to bottom on the Chie screenshot, Strength, Magic, Endurance, Technique, and Luck.]

Furthermore, hitting certain levels will unlock Special Skills that you can equip to your character. Special Skills grant effects such as strengthening moves and making characters move faster and you can have up to four skills on your character at a time. Skills can also be acquired by defeating boss characters that appear on every fifth floor within a dungeon and there are over 100 in all to find!

Partner Characters

Upon starting off in Golden Arena mode, you can also pick a navigator character to bring along with you as a partner in addition to your fighter of choice. Partners have strong skills of their own and fighting alongside them will raise their Social Link level. As a partner’s Social Link level goes up, they’ll learn how to pull off other skills and becoming increasingly helpful in your adventures.

A navigator character must already be unlocked ahead of time in order to use them as a partner in Golden Arena Mode.
Navigator characters can be acquired by visiting the Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Players Guild here. [This is likely an arcade-only feature. The original Persona 4 Arena had a similar unlock system for the arcade version done via a web site whereby players could pay for aesthetic unlocks using points accrued by playing the game if they did so with a registered Nesica card. All of that content was available either as DLC or by unlocking them in the console versions.]

Ultimate Level Course: Heavenly Paradise

The Ultimate Level Course, Heavenly Paradise, is the final and hardest course that players can enjoy, featuring only the strongest opponents. Compete with other players throughout all of Japan to see just how many floors you can manage to clear out!
