Active help has Fishing separate from min/btn.

However, it is confusing as fuck because the text says Perception and the image says (in french) Gathering. "Your chances of reeling in a fish after hooking it are directly affected by the fish type and your Perception rating". I'm inclined to think it's Gathering though because Fish Size active help does cite Perception.

Ah yeah, then there's that, the seemingly incredibly rare chance to straight up lose a fish that you began reeling in.

Perception helps you hook larger fish.

Gathering helps you actually reel them in. Gathering is also the stat that affects your time-to-hook.

I tested this as I was leveling, when I'd have a piece break ahead of the others (due to upgrades, etc) - which left me without a large chunk of one stat or the other.

I thought Perception was for HQ% and gathering was % to catch and size.

Perception affects fish size (ilm) and each fish type has a predetermined size where anything at that size or larger is marked as a HQ.

Don't know if it was ever in question (I was unsure myself), but seems like day/night toggles at 6 ET. IE, 6 PM to 6 AM is night. At least for Fullmoon Sardine purposes.

ah, yeah, lol thought that was common knowledge

music fades out during night too (at 6pm) and starts again at dawn (6am) which is useful if you fish by ear like me

Another random fact then, that might be common knowledge here but I've run into many in the game who don't seem to know.

Weather cycles in 8-hour in-game chunks. Midnight-0800, 0800-1600, 1600-midnight.

Also, your fish pool is decided when you cast and not at the time of catch. This useless fact is brought to you by the fact I cast in Gridania during the rain, it stopped raining during my reel, and when I hooked the fish (was like 12:06AM game time), there was no rain but I caught a raincaller. See? Useless but interesting.

ftr i googled it and apparently it's because the mooch fish is weather dependent? (mushroom crab) fuckin weird i've never seen that message before

It is, and there's no other moochable fish in that area, so if you try and mooch when the weather isn't around there's just nothing to catch.

I reported this as a bug a few months ago.

it should default to catching another fish after the mooch if the Fog weather condition isn't met.

but it gives an error message instead which is a bug

In order to do that they'd have to add other fish to the potential pool of moochable fish, which means when it is foggy the Mushroom Crab wouldn't be a 100% catch on a mooch.

Since there's really no other reason to fish in that location other than getting the crab for your log it's really not an issue of any significance.

All the new fish are hard as shit to catch. It's awesome. I'm still farming up the HQ's to grab the new hat and then the new pole.

Kida's Guide has a lot of great info now. I'll edit the first post with some fishing links for new peeps.

Is there a soft cap on perception for fishing like there is for the other gatherers? Eg. No matter how much you have on botanist you can't get above a 15% base chance for HQ without extra abilities.

Theoretically yes but I don't know what it is. It is assumed to be 15% but fishing may be using a different system.

It's likely the fishing caps are way lower due to lack of offhand, or god is truly a cruel mistress.
