Similar situation happened at my old apartment building and the landlord refused to pay for any damages. The lady took him to court and won because he is required to get the roof fixed/inspected every so many years, and he couldn't prove that it was done within that period. I have no idea if that applies in your state but it might be worth checking into.

Yeah, the only problem is if they do routine inspections once a year (and if they feel that's sufficient) and they did it on time, and it just happened to happen between inspections. After further inspection the damage on the mattress isn't bad enough for me to really be a bugger about it. But they better fix the water stains in my ceiling and probably treat my carpet where the water was running on to.

This stuff dominated the water stains I had in my ceiling before I replaced the roof. Unless the light hits it at just the right angle, it perfectly matches the ceiling paint and covered completely. Tarping around the ceiling was annoying but worked well.
