Can be sold and traded. Except, you know, who the fuck is going to bother with things as they are? I've never been less inclined to even bother with this than ever.

Also I haven't gotten a single V (just predominantly IIIs and a token few IVs) on any of the 24 DoL or 19 DoH conversions i've done of the Serpentskin/Dragonskin shit.

    ^LOL

Anyways, something Ive noticed quite often, actually like alllllooottt recently is when I manage to fuck my crafts up and break them either by messed up macro or broken gear the items have been returned to my inventory like 80% of the time. Did I miss something!? its been happening since the release of expac

Its always been this way, well at least since 2.0. Idk about the 80% chance tho, that might have just been you gettin hella lucky, think its more along the 50%s or less even.

Looking at the new gear, it seems to vary a fair bit based on piece. looking at BSM, making the i170 (hq) tool better than the i180 seems like a pretty rough deal, but the bsm i170 hat HQed should pretty easily beat out the i180 one (only 5 less control on crafted HQed), body not so much again (HQed body having 14 less craft, 5 less control). With hands, legs and feet easily overmelding above the i180 stats (disclaimer about unknown caps).

Thinking I'll get the i180 tol&body where the meld gap is nuts and multimeld everything else, especially accessories pretty hard since they're cross class and see how things turn out down the road.

While I understand that they want to put a stop to the "everyone can craft everything" (but realistically, this just changes it to "those with the most gil can still craft everything"), it's still pretty silly in a game where a large part of the selling point is that you can be anything :/ but, beating a dead horse.

if you can be bothered to make more materia later, can probably cash in on some craze the first few days, not like it was ever hard. People trying like crazy for V's soon _might_ push IV and III prices down again.

One thing to consider : unless tomorrow's patch drops more recipes, there may well be /very/ little reason to bother with any of the upgrades at all for multiple classes. CUL has literally nothing more difficult than 1-star 60 recipes, and ALC's new recipes are only intermediate mats. Because of the likely best upgrade order, folk are unlikely to benefit from anything after the CRP mainhand and offhand. ARM has some useful and difficult finishing recipes, but only once you've got spare materials -- everything but the BSM head piece is either for a useless upgrade or combat.

It's really BSM, WVR, LTW, and GSM where there's even much benefit to going even partial i170, at least until further recipes come out or red scrip mats are more plentiful.

The i180 mainhands and body have significantly higher base stats, but their strengths are overwhelmingly focused on Craftsmanship. If you're not near a Craftsmanship threshold, the value of +CP and +Control are likely to be much more valuable, even before you consider the Red Scrip difference (4 scrips versus /18/ for mainhand).

I'm having a little trouble conceptualizing what they want crafting to be, other than "Hard".

The reason I say this is with the exception of food, and potions for the super-high-end raider, I can't think of really relevant reasons to craft now, if you aren't crafting for other crafters.

There are zero pieces of end-game gear as far as I can tell for even the high end raider, unlike 2.5 where you could overmeld right side for some interesting combos.

    What does crafting "do"?

    Food
    Potions
    Minions
    Glamour
    Housing
Crafting gear for other crafters (an inevitably shrinking market from day 1 - early arrivers will make bank, late arrivers will wonder what the fuss was about)
    ???

Am I missing some application for crafting here? It seems to have very little relevance to the game as a whole. It is its own "thing" and not part of the greater world.

Well tanks arguably should be using melded i150 accessories but that's about it.

Something to remember is that we are still in the first "set" of content for the expansion. Right now, there appears to be little benefit to the massive investment required to advance your crafts. However, it would not surprise me if in 3.1, or soon after, the content was expanded to include more relevant items. If this does happens, the crafters that have invested their time and resources could make bank.

Alternatively, it's possible no new useful crafted gear comes and their effort is a waste.

Being an early adopter is always a bit of a gamble, though it would be nice if it was at least a *little* clearer where SE intended to go with crafting's utility in HW.

The only new items we should expect with 3.1 would be crafted accessories.

That and probably some crap to do with the new relic quests.

    Yah, I'm over that.

I was patient through 1.0 crappy beta.
I was patient through 1.0 and continued to pay and got my legacy mark.
I was patient through 2.0 and the reboot while they rebuilt faith with the community.

I'm no longer willing to be patient:
There is no variety to end-game in terms of raids. There is one end-game raid.
There is no variety to gear. And by that I mean interesting combinations. Nothing that "extends Rampart duration", "Enhances Shroud of Saints effect". It's basically straight ilvl progress, which since there isn't any variety to raids isn't really a problem, but it would be nice to pick and choose a little.
There is no variety to the number of people I can do events with. I can do stuff with 3 other people, or 7 other people, but God forbid I want to do something with 5 people or 12. The world might end. Or I have to invite randos to get drops we're trying to get for our group (and don't you dare say hunts cause they are stupid and boring).

That's about what I'm expecting. The crafted gear has always been 20 or so item levels below raid gear and roughly on par with tome gear, so the i180 stat is not surprising. Serious raiders almost never used left-side crafted gear, just accessories. The biggest deterrent right now to using i180 crafted gear, for the demographic that typically buys it, is the price for the mats/grade 5 materia and the lack of i180 accessories. That will level out eventually though, I suspect.

If 3.0 crafting is anything like 2.0, your ability to craft the most recent gear will be significantly predicated on your completion of prior tier crafting gear grind. It would not surprise me if you needed current craft gear to even begin 3.2+ or whenever they add the next tier.

I'm pretty sure there is always a market for almost every new item that gets released, you just need to use some judgment and watch the competition. There was always someone to buy gryphonskin rings, primal crafted weapons, kirimu and wootz, etc. And now, people will buy thavnarian glamour, the i180 tank set, and whatever else even if you think its worthless. Sure the items could be made so that every thinks they are viable, but thats for the buyer to decide. As a supplier, you just need to watch the trends and get that money to buy the first ishgard plot. If you think all this effort isn't worth getting the best plot in ishgard or airship mats then thats a whole 'nother converation lol

Secondary classes, especially for players that don't play endgame content as heavily. A lot of more casual players are just polishing off the Law gear on their primary classes, or even just starting to gear up through Expert dungeons or Alexander on their primary classes. The new crafted gear is significantly better than Expert dungeon drops or anything available from a vendor, and it'll do a lot toward closing the gap into Alexander NM.

You won't use it regularly in the endgame, but that's not the point -- they don't want people dependent on gil expenditures at the endgame, or the repair economy would still look like the bad days of 2.0 where you skipped killing enemies so you'd break even on a dungeon run. The purpose is to avoid having as many folk going into Fractal at i145 wearing all NQ gear while the rest of the group is wearing i190 (or, down the road, i220) and trying to do big pulls.

Yes, because the first thing people want to do when leveling secondary classes that they'll never use for meaningful content is spend absurd amounts of money buying and melding crafted gear.

Rather than use the uncapped tomes they have no other use for to just get gear for free.
