Was there anything in the update notes about quick synthesis success rate being changed? It is a TON more reliable now.

I used it once since the update to make 20 things, and failed again.

So about quick synthesis...do you actually get a decent amount of XP from it now? And does it use up the Crafter's Grace buff you get from the GC manuals?

Been thinking of using it more since the 2.1 patch.

You get the same XP from each Quick Synth that you would get if you just one-shot the synth without any touches. I'm guessing that the only way it's good for XP is if you're dead set on AFKing while doing it, and don't care about using your mats/shards/crystals efficiently. I'm not sure whether it's faster XP to quick-synth, or to arbitrarily hit touches before completing the synth for the bonus XP (not trying for HQ or anything, just raising the quality a bit before you finish).

Well the way I do a lot of my crafting/grinding is just to have a 8 step macro and a book nearby. Quick Synthing would just speed up the process, and let me take a shower/do groceries etc instead. My main concern is whether or not it benefits from the Crafter's Grace buff or not.

I'm currently unsubbed so I can't test this out, but I am curious.

    I don't see why it wouldn't.

Either way, the way to exp is via leves, not craft spamming.

Sooo, been playing 14 for a week or two now. Back in ff11 I fished and had 3 crafts at 100 profiting mostly off haks and hexed -1 gear. When I asked in my ls about making money off crafts in 14 I got a meh type of response with the recommendation of taking all crafts to 15 first. Is crafting worth it? If so, where should I start? Looking for a way to make some steady gil, I don't mind grinding some farming and whatnot to get through some levels.

Being able to meld stuff for yourself / not have to bug other people for it is a bit of a convenience-saver. If you want to actually make money with any crafting you kind of have to really look at what sells. It's certainly not "easy" money.

Getting every craft to 15 isn't strictly necessary. 1st post has the highlights as far as crafting cross-class abilities of note go.

Crafting seems to have become a service-based industry. Melds and two star requests are a better money maker than trying to penny-pinch and beat the undercutters on the market. Depends on server I suppose. Mine is terrible...unless you are a weaver.

I don't know, I feel I've been making good money off 45-50 level crafts. But I also farm my own materials and don't put too much up at once. You just have to find something that works for you and stick at it.

Talk to me about mining/botany/fishing - do they make decent money, do they support certain disciples of the hand, or are they more just something to waste time on?

MIN/BTN are great for supporting crafts, not really for making money directly.

MIN for BSM/ARM/GSM and to a lesser extent ALC.

BTN for CRP/CUL and to a lesser extent WVR.

Fishing is the biggest time waster, 90% of fish are just there for the challenge of being caught to fill out your log or set personal records for size and have no use other than to NPC, a small handful are used in CUL and a few ALC recipes.

The actual act of fishing is about as engaging as it was in XI originally (cast, wait, click, result). It's also a massive inventory hog with baits and lures.

Depends on your definition of decent and your level of patience. DoL is boring as fuck, but that shouldn't come as a surprise. The money to be made in any profession is pretty low, since the barrier of entry is also pretty low. DoL dig up items, so of course they support DoH jobs. I actually made a surprising amount of gil selling the ores I dug up while leveling MIN from 1 to 50 (I did the whole spread without any leves so I ended up with a LOT of ore), but I'm sure those prices have dropped along with everything else (ymmv, server differences, etc.).

DoL certainly takes less effort to make money, since you don't have to actually make anything. As with any money making scheme, only you, or someone else on your server, can answer what's best for making money. Personally, I prefer to level my chocobo while spiritbonding for materia in order to make money. It makes me feel like I'm actually accomplishing something other than just pure mind-numbing money farming.

Thanks, it's probably just all a culture shock really. Going from making 3-4m a day in ff11 without much effort to scraping by with the hundreds of gil I get from a random quest. I'm not really enjoying the Disciples of the War side of the game because it feels like I'm just running from point a to point b to click something over and over. Trying to find something that I can work on long-term that will mean a sustained gil flow.

Maybe I'll just pick a DoH and start cranking away at it, is there a certain craft that tends to be in more demand? I saw quite a few posts about clothcraft as I was surfing this thread. I know server/market matters, I'm on Excalibur if that helps.

edit: maybe I'll just start working towards the "game changers" in the OP

Yea there's nothing to gather/craft in this game that's gonna make you large amounts of gil casually unless you're extremely lucky and find a completely (and regularly) untapped market.

The sheer number of people with DoH/DoL leveled makes that virtually impossible, nothing is scarce.

What's worse (I guess) is the DoH system strongly incentivizes you to level multiple (almost all) DoH, and it's extremely easy and fast to do with leves. Getting level 50 in all crafts isn't some lifetime long-term goal, it's a relatively short term endeavor if you know what you're doing and have some resources at your disposal.

It's easier/cheaper to level all DoH to 50 in XIV than it is to level 1 craft to 100 in XI.

Yes these sell well but at very low prices. On Lamia you are looking at 2-5k for an hq accessory. There was a time I held the only sales for an HQ crit+ wrist that cost 300gil to make and sold for 10k. It didn't take long before it was undercut down to 4k~2k with 8 or more for sale. I only ever put up 1-2 items even if I'm the only one on the market. It's just that some of these items aren't selling in high volume with the retainer limit we currently have to be efficient.

Cdgreg, good to see you move over from 11.

As you prolly remember, I loved crafting in 11 as well, with every craft 100+ and a couple 110. Having said that, you need less money every day than 11 needed. 3-4m a day in 11 is probably the equivalent to 100k a day in 14 given the current state of both economies. The most expensive every day item on the AH in XIV is something like a Vanya robe. In XI you could run out and drop 150m in a day to complete a relic if you felt like it and had the currency or metal plates available to buy. In XIV you can take a relic start to finish in a day with some help and like 50k (unless you +1 it, then it takes two weeks to farm the myth).

I think you will enjoy crafting in XIV. The advice on getting everything to 15 is very sound. Those abilities are almost all required (with the exception of rapid synthesis - armorer) as you level. I took two crafts to 50 before I took everything to 15 and I now consider that to be a mistake. In addition, certain abilities are much better than others at 50. In particular Byregot's (crp 50), Steady hand II (cul 37), and Careful synthesis II (WVR 50) are pretty awesome.

    My turn for a question:

HQ Militia off-hand only has 1 slot for materia. In reality, how many total melds will it actually accept? It lists 19 craftsmanship as cap which is a pretty big number.

All meldable gear can accept 5 materia.
