I'm not upset about the number of the sets of gear, but fuck, put something interesting on them. Make me actually have to consider if something is better or not.

Leveling wise, blm was more interesting in XI. Yea, end game you ended up doing the same shit at every event. Bliz/Thunder all the time, stun, sleep. But at least leveling up you actually used water and shit. Back when leveling up took a century (which I don't miss) but it WAS different. Back when SC's were useful... yea. More interesting for sure.
In XIV? Fire until you run out of mp > transpose > thunder > fire repeat. Replace transpose with blizzard 3 when you get it, 1-50 right there. There's nothing else going on. Sleep once in a while maybe but that. is. it. Oh wait. I forgot. If a mob is low on hp you can sub in scathe for thunder since you ain't gunna get all that damage from thunder before it dies. Hardly a stupid post. I don't know how you can say XIV's blm is more complex than XI's. Granted solo'ing in XI was slow/boring but you actually did shit like kite mobs, sleep, nuke, bind, gravity, etc. Again, not crazy complex but it's absolutely more than what we have now that's just a pure face roll.
Yeah except for the fact your not standing in the same spot for 5+ hours.
I'm not asking for an XI remake but XI was fun for it's time. I don't want to play that game again, no time for it and I'm over the long ass shit(like sitting in one spot forever). But the fact is that game had a lot more going on blm wise than XIV does for blm. Really don't know how anyone can argue different. Three abilities that you use the entire time from 1-50. That's it. I'm not saying XI's blm is toooootally awesome and we should copy paste it into XIV. Nope. Don't want that. Just saying XI's blm had more going on than XIV by a long shot.
Puddings.
Trying to recall my glorious blm days with all my blue box gear and delicious +int food. Barely got to use AOE magic unless it was a sparse camp and only for skillchains, lots and lots of resting between fights unless things died immediately. Never used stone outside of Ballista 40 Cap for stonega II. Fights essentially consisted of fire in the early game until 40's, when it was nothing but blizzard or water(ga) for distortion chains until AM, when it became freeze and only freeze for distortion. Endgame consisted of standing still until synching a thundaga III with about 15 other blms to kill whatever content people were trying to zerg.
Yeah. Seeing big numbers was fun, but I wasn't using a massive variety of spells. Seems like the OP is upset at the traditional rotation-based mage play, and while I'll give you that fire > fire > fire is redundant, the game is new, and the onus -is- on SE to incorporate varying spells of length and potency, especially with a trait system that just begs to have cooldown reductions and instant-casts on it.
Go play pyromancer in Rift. That is how black mage could and should end up. Scorching until you get the crit for insta-cast pyroblasts for massive damage was literally the most fun I've ever had with a mage class in any game. Blm was fun in XI just for nostalgia's sake (and the fact that I was geared to the nines).
Perhaps we have traded a long list of spells we hardly used for some spammable, but theres a ton of dodging and shit going on at endgame that more than make up for it imo.
Totally agree, I like end game a lot more in XIV where you need to dodge and actually be on your game. I don't miss XI's sitting in one spot, resting for mp, blah blah blah wasted 4 hours and go nothing done.
That's all I'm saying. Timing nukes to take down multiple mobs and then sleeping them. Stuff like that. It's not amazing but it's more than our boring rotation is now. Again, not looking to play XI blm just saying XIV is lacking in the creativity department.
Edit: Comparing blm to pld as far as rotations go;
Halone combo is your hate booster, but you still have flash for aoe, you hit your spirits within/cos when they're up, rotate mitigation abilities, pop a provoke if you loose hate, etc. There's more to do.
On bard:
straight arrow > blood letter > apply dots, follow with heavy shot, straight shot on proc, bloodletter when cd resets, misery's end when mob is at 20%. Pop buffs when they're up(there's what... 4?) Aoe with wide volley > rain of death if it procs, Rain of death just for the -10% dmg debuff to help the party out.
These classes were just more thought out it seems to me. I duno.
What's this maintenance about anyway? Was hoping to play today D:
It's over in 30 mins, I think you'll make it.
And who the fuck knows, it's the NA servers only so they're probably replacing the dead hamsters.
I miss gear sets. I don't miss the clunky, crappy UI that forced players to use windower / spellcast to swap between sets.
Gearswaps were a unique element SE brought to the table and for better or worse it allowed people to add layers of depth to their character that isn't there with a gearladder. I mean even the most basic itemization in this game sucks so far. But the game is still in vanilla and we can hope to see improvement by this games Zilart xpac.
So a year or so.
yeah, I was gonna say. Pretty sure I saw "Unable to update Group JP yadda yadda" when I logged in this afternoon.
So the JP maint was 6-8AM JST, how convenient for them.
See, there's still something to bitch about.
Spoiler: show
Resting isn't an issue in XIV nor is feebing, stoneskin or needing to plant debuffs.
The spirit of needing multiple sets (dmg, accuracy, hybrid) or trying to build around gimmicks (sorc, kclub, holy bolt) to beat content was something unique and ultimately successful at keeping people playing. Obviously it wasn't perfect but neither are ilvls and gearscore. We're 3 weeks in and the QQ about gearscore and ilvls has just begun.
Yeah, that shit is just silly, considering how the game's been out less than a month.
OH, that reminded me. My biggest (stat wise) complaint is how spell speed isn't haste, aka doesn't make dots tick faster. Hitting breakpoints in WoW felt so, so fucking gooooooooooooood on dot classes.
