Most of my experiences doing the pre-endgame dungeons have been overall positive barring 1 Qarn failure and a Dragoon ragequitting Garuda but who cares about a DPS? Aurum Vale and Sunken Temple were the only dungeons that I legit failed on the first try.

If you can follow instructions and read, what game you came from is irrelevant. The rules of this MMO aren't much different than others.

OH GOD I just realized it'll probably be like the mission one, where it's not an average ilvl, but each slot needs to be above a certain ilvl. Fuck. Fucking retarded fucking fuck.

I guess it doesn't matter much at this point, but WoW and XI certainly had a different player makeup just because of what style of MMOs they were so "people will be people" is kind of a cop out answer to the assertion that XI had a "better" playerbase (whatever that's supposed to mean, its also highly dependent on what point in each game's lifespan we're talking about here, because Post/Pre-Abyssea XI is very different as is Post/Pre-Wrath WoW), because you're basically answering an anecdote with another (hypothetical) anecdote. Most people I've seen that wax nostalgic about XI's community are probably talking about the sort of community that forms when a game is ridiculously unintuitive and cut-throat forcing you into groups, so basically back when XI was basically a prettier EQ. For those sorts of people XIV would probably not be their thing because it's undeniable that XIV has taken cues from just about every single modern-day "casualized" (relatively speaking) MMO- most notably the cross-server dungeon finder, which added to their complete retardation in not adding a group kick option makes it a griefer's paradise.

Really I'd just recommend these people to go play EVE since that probably has a community more akin to what the old MMOs had.

Sorry for derailing the thread more, guess it can be taken to PM if its deemed too off-topic.

Didn't they say it's going to be an average ilvl? Or did my mind rationalize their words too quickly?

Yes, but that doesn't really mean anything. My average iLv on Paladin is 62.

I'll laugh heartily if they overlook the fact that you can wear lighter armor even though you'd never want to and you end up having Pally/Warrior griefers that go in wearing ilv 70 Bard Armor or whatever and then immediately switch over to their AF.

The current Materis system is going to potentially fuck up the whole gear score thing if they aren't careful.

Yup, I think when people say "XI had a better playerbase" it's in reference to the closer-knit nature of the game that forced upon you social interaction, a network of friends/associates and a reputation system that culled the lowest dregs from the society of gaming. The devs of XI so loathed their base, pretty much only the hardcores and resilient stuck around through the CoP era and beyond. If you managed to not pull your hair out doing story missions or dealing with hours of LFP, you had comrades in arms to share your experiences with which made for a much more meaningful experience when you finally overcame the 0/50+ droprate on some shit in Salvage. The wars between HNMLS, the hours spent slaving away in penal colonies (Kings) and the focused community left a lasting impression in comparison to the whirlwind pace of games where within 6 months the 'best' gear will become shit that scrubs can easily walk into.

FFXIV encourages you to play the first 50 levels like an offline FF game, then tosses you into a postgame chock full of grinding. It doesn't encourage that community building that is so needed to keep asses in seats and subscriptions ticking. Between DF encouraging asshole behavior and everything being instanced, you rarely get the opportunity to party with people from your own server which is vital to establishing a network of people you give a shit about and serves as motivation for you to login when you're done with your own aspirations.

I'd like to know: How many people here on BG came into XIV with zero contacts and are currently in a FC they feel will be around in 6 months?

i came into XIV with zero contacts (on my server, i know some people on other servers), but I know for sure I wont be around in 6 months in the same FC I am now and on the same server.

That's a good assessment of FFXI. Best I've heard so far. As for this question, just joined an FC minutes ago. I said that if someone asked me to join theirs, it'd be a good one. I must have had.. 100 blind FC invites. Anyway, yeah I think landed in a good one - the people are nice. I don't know about the FC or the members though, but I know I'll be around longer than 6 months.

Considering that this FC is -my- FC, I'd say that I'll be around in 6 months. I originally had 3 people that I wanted for it that were locks; it's grown considerably since then. No, I don't fit your criteria, though, and that doesn't mean that its a bad one. Between FATE grinding to cap and bottlenecks that do nothing -against- encouraging elitism, the game may be technically sound enough (and even that's suspect in areas concerning latency and lag) but is not the panacea some prayed it would be.

There needs to be another tier of loot to this game. Mythology armor takes way too damn long to get to be of any use to progression oriented people and coil drops are so full of RNG that we get fucked in the ass that we've yet to see any tank or healer loot period and just get nothing but DRG loot when we don't even bring a DRG. I imagine if coil had more bosses it'd be better but with just 3 shots a week it's ridiculously stupid trying to gear because shit just straight doesn't drop with any kind of usefulness. WoW 10 mans had the same problem but at least you got 10-16 bosses a week to try from instead of 3 and picking up Valor point armor was much quicker than the 12+ weeks required from mythology for the armor alone not counting accessories or relic+1.

I think you should take a closer look on job requirements for gear.

You could do this with accessories, but that's about it.

I came into this game with a group of 4 other friends pretty much, and we're in our own FC. I doubt it'll be around in 6 months, because fuck recruiting, hopefully we can find a group to join.

That being said, I have yet to meet a group of people on this server that left any form of impression on me (or left a terrible impression). The only people I've been like "I WANT THIS PERSON IN OUR GROUP/I WANT TO JOIN THEIR GROUP" have been random awesomes I've met on duty finder... from other servers.

That's what can make DF very depressing, when you're not constantly paired up with asses. Seriously, I miss the cool people I played with through DF. I almost consider DF to be a bad idea just for the reason of never seeing folks like that again. I get the reason for it, but the mechanics of it goes against said reason.

On the upside I guess, if PvP takes off that'll be one avenue for getting to know certain people in a cross-server capacity. Wondering if those will be handled in the same instance data center groupings though, so you'll only be meeting "half" of your region's population.

On another note, restricting mail to friends only is kind of dumb but I can understand it. Restricting friend requests to currently online people is kind of dumb though (so you can't make friends with yourself or share banks across alts or whatever).

    I concur.

There's so much I miss from XI. Difficult story missions, tightly knit communities, activities that require dedication. Gear wasn't handed to you on a silver platter and relic weapons were a god damn dream to most players.

I despise this token system they seem to have taken from WoW. Justice/Valor points and some vendor selling the upgrades, it's the same fucking thing.

Now it seems like they've just taken warcraft's dungeons/instanced content bullshit and repeated it en masse. God I miss the open world of vana'diel. al'taieu, tu'lia. Sure some things were instanced like dynamis/salvage/assaults but they all had one thing in common. You didn't have to grind them repeatedly for multiple hours day after day.

Maybe I am wearing rose tinted glasses
