I was wondering/worrying about this actually. Besides spamming Flash and then tabbing mobs to alternate Savage/Rage combo on (I'm level 30) is there any sort of a cleaving ability later? I'm unsure if spamming Flash would actually hook that much hate to me. I mean, I suppose common sense wise at 50 I can rotate Flash, Circle of Scorn whenever CoS is up but if a DPS starts to home in on a mob I'm not actively tanking, outside of using Provoke to get the mob back and re-establish hate, I have a feeling someone would pull my original target off me.
It's just that, I feel a 25s on CoS doesn't seem to be enough. I was hoping for something more like WoW Cleave, Hammer of the Righteous or Heart Strike that I can use constantly. WARs at least get Overpower which can be used every 2.5s
EDIT: HANG ON..... I just realised, the fucking WAR tank last night at level 18 did not use Overpower ONCE to keep hate on more than 1 mob; I thought it was a high level move, it's only level 12!!! .... I had to tank most if not everything on CNJ lol
Being a Paladin, this can get tricky, although, with better gear, it does get easier to manage. Don't know how it is for warriors though. they just seem miles better at AoE tanking.
I usually just mark the mobs up from ranged to melee, cause if i do the melee one first, I'll lose hate on something cause people can't wait for stuff to be gathered before going bals.
Stuff needs to go quick, I get it but yeah.
My point is, If there is one person in the group who does stupid amounts of single target damage + one that does stupid aoe damage. Then add in a SCh who does healing and dots everything up aswell, you might get tanks who can't keep hate on everything all the time.
If all in equal gear, I "sometimes" see a mob going to someone else, but manage to get it back with a lob or just don't bother since it's nearly dead anyway.
But yea, that's why I mark ranged first and melee second. Cause it just makes it easier to gather them up and keep hate.
I've gotten used to just hitting w,a,s or d while turning the camera to keep going in the direction I wanna go.
I use Legacy cause it makes tanking easier. you can turn the camera to an angle where you can actually see something other than something's knees but still move out of stuff easy cause nothing is reversed
The fact I miss a bunch of things from 1.0, as terribad as 1.0 was for the most part.
Is key binding difficult or something? My A is left strafe, D is right strafe, hold right button on mouse to turn and hold both buttons to move. W and S key are combat ability binds. Movement is very easy with this set up.
Holding down both strafes indeed makes RMB dragging behave like spinning while standing still. A silly workaround but I'll take it.
God knows how you move forwards or backwards without using the w or s keys. Do you just strafe away from things? That kind of defeats the purpose of going legacy mode in the first place for running backwards quickly.
You can turn around with mouse in literally 0.01 seconds, and run forward. Right mouse button only turns super fast, then hit left button while still holding right.
Yeah that's the thing, the mobs in AK don't even hit hard so I don't care if one runs over at 30% HP and whacks me a few times. The tank obviously doesn't want to look bad at his job so blames the DD. You don't even need a tank for AK, I've 3 manned the first 2 floors with no tank in the party. I sometimes think 3 BLM + WHM would rock that place faster than any standard party could. Third boss would be tricky though.
I don't complain if a tank loses hate when I've got Raging Strikes on during Fire IIs because I know I'm taking a risk, normally it's only a few seconds because if one does come over I'm pretty much out of MP by then anyway and the tank regains it almost immediately.
We tanks just get a little butthurt when things run away from us. Don't the mobs love us?
I've learned to aoe tank as PLD, since my static DPS all-in single target every trash pull, and my healer is busy spreading disease faster than a plague in Africa. Even with DL/curtana +1, checking individual threat and splitting Halone combo, they can still rip mobs away from me if they really want to. PLD's aoe kit is just poor compared to WAR, but hey, they have to give those poor bastards something.
AK's an "endgame" dungeon, so in the DF you're going to have relic DPS roll up with a brand-new 50 tank. They'll quickly learn that a couple Flashes ain't gonna make everything stick like it did in Sastasha.
Definitely late to this, but didn;t feel like reading 3 pages of complaints. Crystal tower is supposed to be the bridge. I'm willing to bet you can go in with DL gear and get the next step up on the way to relic+1 since both BC and relic gear is ilvl90.
The problem is this was not implemented for launch and has left a gap that needs to be filled by constant grinding of a single dungeon. I hope Myth tomestones will also drop from Crystal Tower as it will give more incentive to do as well as help relieve some of the AK congestion.
As a tank, you can literally move him in the right location and 1-2-3 for the rest of the fight. Hell, you can just eat the freaking cata move if you want if you're geared enough. I just stand still now and pop thrill of battle and let the DPS do their work. Boss dies right after the second cata. Done.
It gets harder if the tank doesn't have relic and the DPS do. I run with a very good blm and brd, both with relic, and even with my garuda's axe, if I'm not 100% watching whatever mob the brd is single targeting, the mob's going that way. Same with the blm if thunderstorm starts proccing like crazy.
Thing is, though, it doesn't matter. Stun the dullahans before shit gets out of hand and the only other thing that hurts in the dungeon are the houndlights, which, while consistently damaging, have no special one-shot attacks.
Its to the point where OP spam isn't going to reliably hold hate, so threading of many moves together becomes key, but that's why you have so many moves at 50. Provoke the mob who ran off at 40,then flash everyone, then Op, then holmgang the other guy, then1-2-3 him, then provoke someone else. Its a workout, but if you want super fast runs while still getting to play as a tank, you gotta put the work in.
As a tank, I don't even grab em. Smack caster until he summons, smack Psyche until caster dies, drag Psyche to the back for EZ LoS and proceed to LOS/stun until he dies. The 2 DPS blow up the regular golems in seconds, then work on Psyche again.
Granted, when I was a fresh 50 I picked up adds (somewhat) making for a more frenetic fight, but shit, when you've done it 60 times and have to realistically do it 6000 more times to get everything you want from it (tomes for full relic), you dont want it frenetic anymore.
I originally just let DPS burn them, but the majority of them suck at keeping them off the healer, so I've grown accustomed to tanking the adds.
My healer friend is in love with me for that very reason.
I literally -only-do AK with people I know, so that's not a thing, thankfully.
As DPS, I usually grab the golems, and drag them back to the tank so all our AoEs can hit it and the boss. They are harmless as long as I stun their slow-ass AoE charge.
really grinds my gears how i cant change the hotbar layout from gamepad layout to bar layout x.x
