So, this afternoon, I had my literally worst run of AK yet. LS/FC wasn't around yet, and I wanted my last 40 myth for my wyrm helm, and I don't usually have much trouble with Duty Finder. The tank and other DPS (a bard) were decently geared but it was obvious they were fairly new 50s. Neither had relic: tank with Ifrit, Bard with Garuda. But they weren't the problem. The WHM had relic and at least a couple pieces of darklight (I didn't bother to look; they at least had body), so they were at least decently geared. Still, I'm not one to judge or care much about gear as we were all at that stage at one point.

We go forward, down the first cultists. We get to the first real pull and the WHM pulls hate pretty quickly. Tank picks them up. WHM pulls hate again pretty quickly. Second pull: WHM pulls hate pretty quickly. Third we do better, Dullahans we don't have trouble. First boss comes, WHM runs out of mana pretty quickly. Pulls hate on the adds. WHM gets killed, but we still win.

Second floor! WM pulls hate quickly on the first pull. I finally start watching the party list to see what's up. Tank down 10%? Better cast Medica. 11%? Medica II! DRG is full health but might take damage sometime? Better give them Regen! Feeling bored? HOLY SPAM! Oh, the tank needs a heal now? LETS NOT TAKE OFF CLERIC STANCE AND JUST SPAM CURE III!

So, Demon Wall comes. We get it to about 40% and wipe. WHM had burned their mana early and had gotten hit by a couple of purple goos. Second round, WHM gets knocked off at the third Repel. Fourth attempt finally gets the win.

After the WHM pulls hate on the first set of mobs on the third floor, I finally ask them why they are spamming Medica Is and IIs. "I like seeing rainbows." Tell them to knock it off and that they are for emergencies, and to please use Cure I and II unless something bad happens. Third floor goes smoothly, up until the last two Dullahans. Long story short, we wipe to them as they both get pulled. So we finally get to the easiest boss of the dungeon.

First attempt: on one of the adds, WHM avoid the circle AOE by standing in front of the boss. You can guess what happens next. Second attempt: The WHM stands in an IC safe position (the urn we tank next to) and never moves, even when targeted with a laser. Third attempt: they avoid a laser without much of a problem. Then they just stand there for the second one that goes for them. "I can't see those lines!" ...You just dodged one a second ago! Third attempt we get the boss down, somehow.

After the run, I'm curious and look up what server they're from.

I've never had anyone in XI kick me because I didn't have any HNM drops, and I've only been in an HNM LS for like, 3 weeks before I said fuck it and pretended they didn't exist.

On the other hand, the playerbase in XIV openly belittles new players for wearing full AF when they're new and they're only doing AK/WP.

Tier gear progression system and super easy gearing creates a high standard, shunning new players completely. Giving new players and veteran players the same playground(wp/ak to farm philo and myth tomes to gear up their main/alternative jobs) is really bad design as well. New players and veteran players shouldn't be doing the same content in a MMO unless the veterans are helping the newbies.

The way devs design MMO's now really sets up this unwelcoming attitude amongst players.

Now it's acceptable for MMO's to be beaten in a month, and if you ran out of things to do it's your fault and you rushed, according to the OF for every MMO ever at least. Why did the genre and everyone's perception of it change to be like this?
It's because people- including many people here- complained about things being grindy, and they complained about timesinks. It reminds me of something else from the OF: a thread in which someone complained that Behemoth or Odin (or both?) were spawning at like 2 in the morning and were saying SE was fucked for making them stay up all hours of the day, as if it wasn't a choice to try to fight a vanity mob in the middle of the night.

MMOs that never end are grindy, by definition. I don't have a problem with that, because I consider them to be a hobby, something I log into and accomplish something in and log out, knowing that there's more to do and there probably always will be- THAT'S THE DRAW. But there's people whose personalities drive them to a lack of sleep and social life as they strive to be the best, and of course those people aren't going to like that for any serious amount of time...as if it's not a choice that they have. So what are we left with? A lack of content, so that people can "beat" the game without having to do that...and then those people- and even more, because more people can clear the lesser content- are still unhappy about it (as we see in this thread) because the game doesn't feel rewarding. I hate to say I told ya so but...

Absolutely. If something like AV happened to drop the best BLM pants until Allagan or AF+2, while WP dropped the best DRG head, while Garuda had the best MNK weapon...etc etc, endgame would be a lot more interesting.

This is why I love the relic quest chain so much, I have to do all forms of content, a bunch of fun bosses, and lots of varied things just to get it finished. I really wish all the BIS gear in this game was a long challenging quest chain, or at the very least, as you said, you needed to do a bunch of different varied content to fully complete your character. Your entire BIS set coming from essentially 2 dungeons, WP + Coil, is not very fun for me. It ends up making the game feel very repetitive and like a grind to me. Gotta log on today to finish coil for my chance at loot! Gotta log on today to do some WP's to cap my tomes!

Why this model has become the "standard" for modern MMO's does not make much sense to me, personally.

Almost forgot how it felt to do WP with idiots, since the past 2 weeks I've been capping my myth by 5x sub-10 min WP with various LS'es. So today I tried a shout pug, nope, never again.

I agree with both of you, but just look at the way it is now lol, even Garuda's weapons are considered gimp now, everyone is like "Relic/+1 or gtfo."

I have Bravura +1 & Artemis Bow personaly so I couldn't care less, but how are new ppl supposed to get a relic if we stop them from fighting with us/learning with us?
Any negative experience will block a brain to assimilate informations, its a human defense system in every of us, and to call someone who just start and who want to learn a "gimp" for not having X gear already pretty much prevent him from advancing in every way.

For them not wanting to listen is a whole new story.

    Anyway, back on topic:
Same would happen if HNMs with Rare/ex drop were implented, it would just take some weeks before you see "BC Turn 1 Looking for ppl @ 1 PLD with HNM<insertnamehere> Armor & relic only!"

I can sort of understand for AK since if you don't have enough DPS for Demon Wall you're going to get slaughtered, but WP? Come the !@#$ on...

Yeah I've been in that position. BRD with Relic Bow went apesh*t on pudding and didn't stop. I couldn't pull hate back and when I did and saw the enmity meter he was way ahead of the other DD and Healer. Not sure what he did but holy hell he was crazy.

If a BRD uses all their damage cooldowns at once and doesn't throw up quelling strikes (and even then a chain of crits could happen), tank isn't holding hate.

To be fair, as a new player, I was happy with this setup because it meant I could get AK gear and get tomes at the same time.

But then I had friends who quickly helped me figure out the runs and I got like 4 pieces of AK gear in my first run so maybe I just lucked out.

    Edit:

It's become standard because by streamlining the game you appeal to the larger potential base that shells out money in cash shops or on vanity items.

Niche games like XI and EVE cater to hardcore / nolifers who are fanatical about playing the game but come off as anathema to anyone who wants to play casually. Listening to some of those passionate vent conversations where people go ballistic after a loss is hilarious (been there) but ultimately for a small segment of the population. Personally, I think there is money in attracting hardcores to a game and milking them while they feast upon eachother as people paid ridiculous sums for gil, bots and gear in the games of yesteryear in a fashion not unlike gamblers in a casino. Unethical? Probably. Profitable? Definitely. However, few developers want to go down that path when WoW proved that milking 12-year old Maximillian with orcs and paladins was the path to making billions.

The problem SE has is they want to be cool like Korean grinders, GW2 and every other carebear MMO but they lack the infrastructure to make bank selling minions, race changes, dye packs and other shit that people (casuals!!) drop money on to look unique. Instead SE demands a subscription where you're locked into paying regardless of what they churn out. It's like SE has one foot in the past (the part about money) without realizing that the other foot is firmly in the F2P bog. Either make the game F2P, whore out those amazing models or commit to a sub and understand that 3+ months per update is unacceptable in 2013-2014. If they wanted to stick to such a long span between updates, they should have slowed the game down.

Imagine how surprised I was when I came to the realization that you couldn't even dye your dungeon gear because apparently only crafted items should have such a luxury.

I do feel this game is trying to be a F2P MMO and a pay to play MMO at the same time, except it takes the worst of both. Lock out timers/restrictions/telling you how often you can play and restricting how much you can play per WEEK, then charging you $15/month, the worst of both being those things.

They need to make up their mind what they want this game to be, and do it FAST, because 2.1 is their last chance before the majority of players quit. 3-4 months for a content update that adds progression below the current highest tier when you most people are going to be in full ilvl90 gear on their mains just by capping myth every week doesn't make any sense, and isn't a good way to keep people subscribing. You're giving a lot of people no way to progress their characters next patch by introducing a dungeon with an ilvl 10 levels lower when most people will be in full ilvl 90 by then.

Stuff like an auto-sort button shouldn't take 4 fucking months to release, it should've been released one week after release, or whenever they finished it. Hell, that hotfix patch earlier that changed a few things should've added it. Same with the right click - > report chat option.

This is what they should have done:

    Week one: auto-sort patch
Month 1: Daily random dungeon queue, leve exp boost, food doesn't fade on death, dungeon exp boost, same server LFG board, right click - > report/blacklist chat option
Month 2: Crystal tower, new primal
Month 3: PVP, daily quests, treasure hunts
Month 4: new extreme mode primals, new dungeon, 2 new hardmode dungeons
    Month 5: New coil turns
month 6: More PVP maps/game modes
Month 7: New crystal tower turns. New jobs and classes added.

This ensures people constantly have things to do and aren't bored, while releasing content as it's finished, and not in one huge burst after 3-4 months of nothing new. Much better for players and gives everyone a reason to stay subbed every month, instead of only subbing for a month or two every 3-4 months. Better from a business standpoint, and better for players. Win/win situation, why exactly don't they do this?

Random complaint: Calling a patch a "hotfix" when you have to take the servers down to do it.

    That is not a hotfix.
