Both systems are shit I think. RNG made XI feel so receptive to the point I felt like I could do most of the content in my sleep and lockouts are pretty much hitting a wall and waiting (not playing) until reset.
I don't think there was ever a time in XI where gear was a clear roadblock to doing content. Job? Definitely. Cliques? Definitely. Specific pieces of gear you MUST have? Nope. Unless your gear was some Iron Scale Mail shit with zero stats or you had empty gear slots, people wouldn't boot you on the spot or dickride about gearscore.
Wasn't that mostly because most fights in early XI didn't have hard rage timers? Was basically a battle of attrition with the only real goal being kill it before it kills you. Gear just made it easier and faster.
Think that sums shit up as well as anyone could. With a lot of the things people are complaining or arguing about they just swung from one bad extreme with FFXI to the other with FFXIV. It's not so much that the basic ideas behind either one were terrible things that should never see the light of day in a game but rather that their implementation of each was lousy and just went overboard at times.
Itemization was silly as hell in FFXI with the totally disjointed numbers and types of stats on gear? Fuck it, make gear as boring as possible in FFXIV and make primary stats king so even what variation you can achieve from secondary stats feels meaningless.
Too much emphasis on god awfully designed open world content in endgame in FFXI? No goddamn open world endgame content in FFXIV, get your ass in the instanced content and there won't be much of it either. Except odin and behemoth which may as well not even be there.
Could go on but to be fair, even if they had come up with good systems somehwere between those two extremes, we'd still be arguing like chucklefucks because the ideal balance of all this shit is subjective as hell.
The majority of XI's content was actually gated as well. There was just a lot more of it and they weren't for an entire week. The biggest culprit has been Nyzul with it's assault tags.
And people definitely did criticize your gear. Hell, we had our very own "gimp player" thread right here on BG.
In the realm of BG elitists perhaps.
Having a Domaru rather than a Hauby would elicit some jeering by the BG crowd but overall you could still get EXP groups, tackle endgame and thrive (in your circle). Your job was far more important than gear in XI. Capped PUP was still garbage besides a middling SAM. In XIV, unless you meet a minimum gearscore there is no way you can survive certain scripted actions.
Conversely, you could roll Kirin with AF-tier people so long as you were willing to have a 2hr+ slog.
Having a Domaru rather than Hauby would elicit jeering from nearly anyone at capped level. How many people with 75s in ToAU error did you know who didn't read KI/BG/XIAH? I'm telling you right now more people knew Domaru was inferior to Hauby than didn't if we're counting people at 75. If we're not counting people at 75 then your point is moot because no one gives a fuck pre75 and no one gives a fuck pre50.
Also the minimum gearscores for XIV are pitifully low. Twintania might be the only thing that needs a PT's avg ilvl of 80. Any of the HM Primals can be done with gear in the 50s. You're arguing like you should be able to clear Nyzul II w/o doing any content above Lv75.
I can't think of a single FUCK YOU BAR where you need ilvl unless you're talking about the thing coming in 2.1? Which, basing off their Crystal Tower ilvl will still be low and I expect the Coil to demand ilvl70 at best.
The only real excuse for not having a Hauby was the price (Hello 3M+ Haubies during Christmas due to RMT inflation) but even then there was probably better equipment a SAM could use. I don't know for sure though.
Caught all the fish, got nothing for doing so. I don't even get an achievement for something like this?! Blasphemy!
I know there is the Rod of Luminary achievements, but yeah, pass. >.>
Who is talking about coil? We're talking about 99% of all the gear from everything aside from AK (for tomes) and coil. Because they did a poor job of spreading BiS gear across a lot of content. Replacing coil with [insert next thing here] doesn't help. It just moves the problem from one encounter to another.
Look up! There's the point far, far above you.Are you just assuming everything will be outdated almost immediately while not even qualifying what almost immediately is on top of that? Sounds bad.
I should stick to my loooooools with you. Because you just don't get it. Simply put: the best gear coming from only a handful of encounters is bad. It's bad even if the game just started, but at least they have an excuse. Patches only reaffirming that concept is real bad. You don't have to have a GED to get that, but it would help. You should stick to your looooooooools and only posting inane drive-by comments and ZOMG SO MUCH THIS when someone praises FFXI. That actually manages to come off as less retarded than when you try to make an argument, which is almost impressive in a way.
Sadly, so many people here are against that. It reminds then, vaguely, of FFXI somehow, so you know what that means: JIHAD!
Though I don't really find issue with BiS gear being replaced every 6 months or so (judging by the update schedule) I do agree that having it all being tied to one encounter is beyond stupid. Not only is it lazy and boring but it also exacerbates the gating issue by tying all gear behind a the once a week lockout. Like if every armor piece came from a separate instance and all of them could drop accessories you would still have RNG bullshit to contend with since you might not get your particular drop but you also have 4 more shots at getting at least one piece of gear from the other instances. Split the drop slots by equip type per job so there is a reason for people to keep helping others with content once you get your stuff.
Instance A: Tank head, Healer Body, DRG hands, MNK Hands, BRD feet, caster legs
Instance B: etc.
Have the final instance require completion of all other instances first and drop the weapons. It's a similar concept to what we have now except the gating isn't limited to the entire run and each instance could be unique in some way instead of just Coil Coil Coil.
Your point is moot because Domaru wasn't getting you booted from parties on the spot on Lakshmi. Unless you showed up to endgame in vanilla gear with lvl14 Balance Rings or something mindbogglingly bad you would be hard pressed to be removed from an EXP/meripo party. Someone might grumble, throw that person in the Gimp thread or leave the group but straight kicks? Rare in XI overall. Endgame raiding was usually the realm of applications or referrals meaning the typical bad player wouldn't even make it into your endgame LS upon review.
For all the griping that would come from not having a Haubergeon you could still do endgame, win content and succeed at your goals without much trouble. What jobs you fielded to content always took priority over what gearspreads looked like barring extreme circumstances or gross player incompetence. Haubergeon simply made the job easier, became the symbol of taking your class 'seriously' and was the elite standard.
It also cost millions of gil which prohibited who could get their hands on one.
Actually, I'm arguing that people dropping/raging about gear in XIV is commonplace and trivial compared to XI. People bitch about what a DF Ifrit, Garuda or AK should look like or demand top tier gear for mid-tier runs. This type of elitism is what the casual mold was supposed to destroy yet here we are with gear elitism instead of job elitism. So much for trumping XI.Also the minimum gearscores for XIV are pitifully low. Twintania might be the only thing that needs a PT's avg ilvl of 80. Any of the HM Primals can be done with gear in the 50s. You're arguing like you should be able to clear Nyzul II w/o doing any content above Lv75.
I mean did you seriously just say FFXIV is more elitist because you pop open Duty Finder and sometimes people are dicks when in FFXI you had to meet a raiding group's gear checks in private before being able to do anything?

Twenty-five thread with somewhere between 50 and 100 pages. Almost all of it is probably gear elitism.
But please tell me more about how your group cleared Salvage in full AF1.
I still don't understand why Rod of Luminary has the same stats as fishing AF. Come on that shit is ridiculous to get.
