On a fight where you only have one enemy a majority of the time, like Titan or Ifrit, you tend to fall behind even worse.
Essentially, you just consider something like Bio2 a 350 potency spell with a 30 second "cooldown". The problem is, because of those "cooldowns", you have to use ruin at least 50% of the time. That's at least half of your time on an 80 potency spell Comparably, the majority of BLMs time is in the fire1 spamming stage, which is a (ignoring M&M bonus since they both get the equal level of it) a 270 potency spell under Astral Fire. Add in that you're getting random Firestarter/Thundercloud procs at 220-396 and 340 potency respectively, and the numbers start becoming grimly one-sided. I've never nailed down an exact potency that a pet adds "per cast", but I've always strongly doubted (and the parser seems to agree with me) that it's enough to make up the difference.
