At best they're an annoyance, at worst they're a limitation that can horrible knee-cap damage potential in a lot of fights.
That's what happened when SE decided to balance around potential spreadsheet damage instead of practical actual-encounter scenarios. It's unrealistic to assume that every MNK and DRG is going to maintain 100% uptime on buffs, dots and engaging but they had no problem using those numbers as the comparison point to everyone else. For my money, playing correctly and hitting all of your directionals should give you a bonus to encourage you to perform well instead of how it is now, which is you being punished for phase changes, random direction changes and general downtime. Tons of risk with your "reward" being comparable to your competition.

Edit: I think the real problem is that there's not really much sliding scale for "Shit player from the OF" and "Mastery of class/encounter." You either know how to dodge Wicked Wheels or you don't. You either know how to keep GL running or you don't. The division feels like "Great" and "Awful" without a "Good, but needs practice" there to keep people comfortable with the idea of bringing melee.

The DPS gap between melee and ranged needs to be significantly in favour of melee to justify how little effort ranged DPS require in comparison. This 10-20% gap doesn't even approach good enough when DPS can only be engaged like 50% of the time (while BRD and BLM have DoTs on everything and drown in Bloodletter/Thundercloud procs) and they get constantly fucked out of Greased Lightning/Heavy Thrust.

While we're on this topic, and I'm sure its been mentioned a million times - fuck Ifrit's Tether. Its the one move in the game that makes me want to rage quit as a melee. Whicked Wheel is close, but as been discussed, it can be managed. Tether on the other hand is a big F.U. to melees. Yes, yes I know, the tank can run around with you, but lets be honest, it doesnt happen that often, and quite frequently you get tethered to the MT due to the frequency of tank swaps

The people who can pull off melee jobs in this game in terms of keeping up DPS even while it's hectic, and dodging fantastically are usually the players who can play any job at an exceptional level. Those players are rare, but it's one of the things I use to gauge new members when we're trying them out.

I kinda go back and forth. If I'm with my FC the DPS come to me so we can kill the nail to Ifrit's right, the tank's left, that way when the dps works their way over to that side there's no chance of any melee getting hit by conals. With PUGs I usually go to the DPS or I get bitched at

You can level more than one job and use the most optimal for the situation.

You can kind of mitigate the tether mechanic by having tank swap on spits, the way it works out the tether 9 times out of 10 is on the OT.

I outparse every job by a good 5-15% except DRG on every fight in the game. DRG is closer to 1-5. This is for the entire fight.

These people have Allagan weapons/are i90. I don't have said weapon either.

We already do a big enough chunk extra, trust me. People just need to elevate their game.

Which encounters do you think physical DPS are optimal for? Which encounters was PLD optimal for in 1.0? (Hell, which ones is PLD optimal for now? WAR has no problem tanking Turn 4 Dreads.)

Turn 1? Nope, melee need to fuck around with the tiles.
Turn 2? Nope, melee need to fuck around with Repelling Shot/Chain Lightning/Firestream/Ballast/Gravity Well and potentially Rot passing.
Turn 4? Nope, shit runs all over the place and there are several AoE waves where melee suck wind.
Turn 5? Nope, Liquid Hell forces melee to disengage for 15 seconds at a time, Dreadnaughts and Twisters make life hell, and they often end up with vulnerability stacks that ranged don't need to deal with. Never mind all the spinning Twintania (and every other boss mob in Coil) does that fucks with positional requirements.

    EX Primals? Nope.
HM Primals? Makes no difference but they still have an advantage on Titan because of bombs and landslides forcing melee to disengage.

Balance in this game is a joke and seeing this thread pop up on reddit today made me laugh out loud.

If we consider "optimal" as "still does more damage than ranged despite all that bullshit", then the answer is "all of them" except the whopping 2 AoE phases of turn 4 where BLM trumps every other class anyways for all of like 20 seconds.

wtf.. My i86 not even close to bis MNK easily outparses my bis i90BRD on Turn 1.

Turn 1- Fuck with tiles, what? You simply move from one side of the mob to the other......

Turn 5- When does Twin spin? Maybe when you one tank it but that's only when Dreads are popping, or she is spitting a Fireball, and in that case it only messes up back attacks.
BRDs don't have to run from Liquid Hell? I realize it's possible to stay in range but there are plenty of times I have to run out of range to avoid party members.

Melee still bitching about any of that shit and PLDs bitching they aren't as good as WAR are bad and should feel bad.

Confirmed for never having played BLM before.

"Bard" and "all ranged" are very different. All these things hurt SMN and BLM just as bad as they hurt others. It hurts BLM arguably worse than others, because moving breaks your current cast and the majority of your damage isn't from DoTs like SMN.

Balance is an argument for potential, not actual player skill. Yes, BRD is easier than pretty much any class. A perfectly geared BRD playing perfectly will still lose to a perfectly geared MNK/DRG playing perfectly in any situation currently in the game.

So I'm confused on what exactly the duty roulette is doing when it queues. Maybe it's always been this way but I haven't looked closely at it until after the recent updates.

Last night some FCmate says he's on final boss of Toto-rak, so I check in-progress low roulette and only get fresh runs. I have to queue the dungeon itself to help him.

Today I do low roulette as tank, nothing pops for 5 minutes. I check the first 5 dungeons, a 2/3 Toto-rak pops instantly.

    {I don't understand}

I guess by optimal I should have said more fun. With current content 20-30 more or less dps won't make or break a fight as much as dreading it will.

I get the feeling that DFR, instead of queueing you for everything and taking whatever will pop first, randomly queues you for one of the available dungeons, and whenever it pops, it pops.

It's the only explaination that's oversimplified to the point of being outright dumb enough for SE to do it.

See, I would accept that. But I can literally do main roulette and get nothing/fresh only. Where if I check CM+Prae I get in-progress for both not 5 seconds later.

Is it a known issue to 90k from a DF party and upon getting back on (within 20 secs) to log back on to be at your HP? This has been happening to me since yesterday and I find it hard to believe that in all 4 of these instances, my PT members were that quick to boot me.

It's hard for me to complete any CT's for myth; out of 5 runs I have only been able to complete 1.

I'm getting really impatient with this game...

Maybe you can tell that to all the T5 party finders on Excalibur, Ridill and Sargatanas.

Rarely do I see groups looking for a WAR specifically but you better believe if they are looking for a tank you will see these combinations

    (PLD) (PLD, WAR)
    (PLD) (WAR)

More 90ks. Don't patch yesterday what you can patch tonight.

Twice it happened when I ate my food before raid. Both times my food buff was missing but food gone from inventory.

We are feeding it. The monster is growing.
