Oh, maybe that's why I cannot login. First time I'm having issues outside of the character creation, it had to happen someday!

Was just able to log on to Excalibur for the first time since service started - guessing a lot of people got booted as well.

It's shitty, but its quite obvious by now that SE was not expecting nearly this many players and this is a result of that. They most likely could have handled what they believed to be the initial launch playerbase, but had no where near the expectations of what was going to happen. (Yeah they had pre-order numbers i'm sure and beta numbers, but you can't rely on just that data to forecast)

That said, shit still pisses me off I can't get in game lol. At least from the looks of it, expansions of worlds will take place this weekend/early next week so hopefully that will help fix it. Other then that i'm just logging in before work now.
What that guy said sounds good but in itself sounds like a damn PR statement. Think about it most MMO's nowadays have people capped and doing *end game* within months of release if not sooner. Do you plan to tell me the servers are going to be like this again once people cap out? There is only so much that happens when you hit the cap this early in a games life, and much of the best stuff will be spammed by the same amount of people every day.

Then again this could be why people scatter launches too. I don't know poor planning if what this guy says is the story. With the number of games released each year they should've just stocked up on servers and pulled them a few months after the rush and be put to use later.

What's needed to be taken account is the fact that the number of concurrently logged players is never as high again as during launch. With times it gets spread out and the rush only happens again maybe during big content patches or expansions, when issues like this tend to arise again (from my experiences with other MMOs).

This. I just don't understand why this isn't the case with every new MMO. I work in a very heavy IT field myself, while not in the realm of gaming I deal with an extremely high user demand on almost all of our servers. In any case of a new rollout, I would rather be proactive than reactive.

While I might spend more $$ on a handful of new servers... I'd rather keep the reputation of being dependable, and eventually pull whatever unnecessary servers we don't need once we verify that server load is perfectly fine running on less. As compared to pissing off alot of my customers and being on the reactive end having to add all kinds of servers because my launch day was a miserable failure. ESPECIALLY when I had an even worse launch on my 1.0 version. Just doesn't make sense.

    Random complaints:

Name font is too gawd damn big. Also I liked the old 1.0 font I saw in screenshots. Hope they add some kind of sizing/config to this.
Gear comparison doesn't show you the difference in stats... you know the thing you want to fucking know.

Other than that I'm having a damn blast.

It's just kinda shocking it's this bad when this is a relaunch. I mean yea, the numbers of players are very high but they had years to plan for this crap. Not only that but they had so many beta stages that they had an idea of how many numbers they were going to get on day one and they didn't do anything about it.

My main story issue is that the main story should be 'epic'. Not 'deliver tea'. That's what I've come to expect from the FF line and it's sad to see them drop the ball.

I have no idea how differently organizations are managed in the video game world or even in Japanese companies as a whole (if that matters), but I like you work in an IT world with high traffic multi-server software systems. And no matter how much the people at my level (programmers, etc) warn or yell about what can go wrong, management and program managers often will ignore virtually all of it in order to cut corners in order to minimize deployment/rollout cost and get their sweet bonuses. But what if it breaks after deployment/rollout you ask? Well, from IT companies I've seen (American obviously), once something is deployed/turned on it now belongs to the maintenance or warranty division of that same company ... which due the amazing way big companies work ... is effectively a whole different sub-company who will take 100% of the blame for all of the financial losses and responsibility while the development/deployment/engineering divisions still get to claim credit for an early and successful product release.

This situation reminds me of a time my Dad told me to bring a jacket somewhere. It was warm when I was leaving but his response was you can't put it on if you don't have it. My point is every company has a habit of preparing for the lowest cost projection. Hence limited servers. Prepare with a deliberate overage in servers and your troubles are gone. After a few weeks start scaling back to the actual numbers needed.

I didn't get into XIV though I was on the fence. I'm glad I didn't. The early access weekend should have been an indicator that they were unprepared to handle the crush that was about to come. They should have taken that time and gotten all hands on deck to immediately work on a functioning queue system as well as massive server additions.

SE is downsizing and was in dire need for this launch to be a success. Instead they have already managed to alienate half of their user base. This game deserves no praise, nor does Yoshida. It's far too early to tell but this may have been the straw that breaks SE's back.

How much does it cost SE to buy a server? It sounds like for every world there are actually multiple servers involved.

We talking 100k? Millions? Once the population drops do unused servers have any salvage value?

Well besides the obviously generalized servers like the account system, software like MMO's does indeed tend to keep functions kept to separate machines. Short term database on one server or cluster of servers (to keep it small and quick), possibly a backup/long term database on another server or cluster of servers (for recovery/rollbacks), some kind of communications server to centralize servers communicating within that world, then one or more servers running the main program (in the case of an MMO, it might be a subset of zones per server), and then one or more other servers depending on the design.

So you have an hour or two of fluff once in awhile, it's a nice change of pace compared to "holy shit dude go here and kill shit, the world depends on it! But do it with out our help... Because we can't spare a soul for assistance".

I enjoy it, giving me time to do and enjoy other things in the (probably new) area at a more relaxed pace.

When I was 12 years old, if I threw such a crybaby bitch fit about a video game, my parents would have asked me why I was being such a bitch. And it should be expected for 12 year old kids to act like kids. Not sure what makes adults flip out over some video game shit, especially when it boils down to "I don't care if they fix it I want it fixed NOOOWWWWWW!!!!!" I hope everyone who has posted 10+ times every time they get an error and whining so hard about a video game quit, much less bleeding vags to deal with in the game in the future.

I love being to able log on and window out and eat my breakfast while reading this thread. Truly the best thread on BG.

Random complaint: Some of these exp walls suck at later levels, trying to get 44 and it's tough when there are 6 FATE groups trying to zerg down one fate.

It's actually gotten marginally better, hence only 15 pages over the last few days after 45 pages in like 5 hours the first day lol.

I'm still assuming it's bad enough that a lot of people are saying fuck it, though. I can't imagine *that* many people are willing to sit there spamming to get in through 1017.

not having issues with too much exp needed, but seriously I'm 25ish and every fate I ever see is like... run in, hit something like twice, ends and gives me 2.5k exp (like half a quest)
