There are parts of some area themes that are alright (Aleport is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, which is kind of reinforcing the point) but the long silence before looping is a real downer. Lost City and the extended version of Pharos kind of get it right and I hope they continue with that in future areas (not just dungeons).
Can't remember the last time I did an expert roulette. I cap my soldiery now by hunting. Usually cap within 4 hours of logging in.
Oh the top of the BGM. Yeah no looping sucks because I like a lot of the music. Give us an option to loop BGM and disable the battle music please!
I don't think XIV's music is bad, but XI's music is amazing so I'm not going to put it down. However, I think a lot of it has to do with nostalgia, since I didn't fully appreciate XI's music until I quit (and even now, I only listen to the most memorable tracks).
XIV's music has moments like that and overall the music quality is high but there's no nostalgia to push it over the edge (yet, if ever). I don't think it's worse, I could listen to a bunch of XIV tracks just as easily as XI.
I swear the new meld system is the whole reason reason the economy is bad and should feel bad.
Materia gets destroyed, including the ones already melded. Demand for materia goes up.
Item gets destroyed, so the demand for the items to spiritbond goes up.
Since the item was destroyed, the demand for everything that makes the item goes up.
As frustrating as it could be, it really was a good system. Pre relics going for 10m+ when they didn't just fly off the shelf. Pre relic materia going for 2-3m, etc.
Adding to the music complaint. Had all sound off after a week of play.
Ff11 I had on to the day I quit. SoZ made running to sky pre pads OK.
14 I don't even give a crap about any zones outside hullbreaker. The look and feel makes me turn the sound up sometimes.
This. I always have sound off, except I enable sound effects when I'm queued so I can hear the ding.
Complaint: Finally getting around to levelling desynth, and now I know why people complain about demimaterias. It's like they managed to get XI's crafting system into this game.
Hullbreaker was a lost opportunity. I don't mind the music there, but using *that* recycled 1.0 music was just kinda lame. The dungeon is great, but the old La Noscea field music would've been much better, and they basically tossed that track aside (as well as the old Thanalan/Gridania music).
But anyway, I do agree with Hiryo - The base XI OST is pretty ugh. It wasn't until Naoshi Mizuta stepped in that the music got *really* good. If you put it up against the 1.0 OST (not Before Meteor, but basically everything 6th Astral Era), the 1.0 OST wins, but not by a huge amount.
I can still remember the 1.0 Thanalan and LL town BGM.
It takes me a minute to try and recall what their 2.0 equivalents sound like, and I hear them both pretty much every day.
I really like most of XIV's various themes for boss fights, but aside from those, I can't really recall anything sticking out too much.
Generally, though, I think that XIV makes the same mistakes as many other games - switching to different music when in battle. As far as I'm concerned, that's the best way to kill any semblance of atmosphere. Of course, it's not as bad as, say, random encounters that make the screen shatter and cause your eardrums to burst when you were just thinking how much you're enjoying the music while climbing Mount Gagazet, but in general, I always prefer integrating the atmosphere into the BGM of an area, fights included.
That's one of the reasons why I think that FFXII is the most atmospheric game of the series - it did away with the random encounters and finally created an atmosphere when exploring that wasn't destroyed whenever you took a few steps. When players are worried about getting into fights not because they might get killed but because the fight will completely destroy the atmosphere, you're definitely doing it wrong.
One step forward, two steps back, I suppose, though Amdapor City definitely is an example of how to do it right, that's one of the dungeons I like.
It helps that XII also has fucking amazing music. Marry me Sakimoto.

Then I noticed that the entire thing is wrong since it should be "ignore everything but hunts, CT/ST and coil" because everything else is pointless.
random compliant being, everything is irrelevant.
I never really thought about it before... Do they even lock you out of getting into hunts before completing... well, anything? Like, is there some sort of pre-req? Maybe just 2nd lieutenant and level 50 (what a joke)?
- Make lv1 alt account with the 2-person chocobo
- bot it so he auto-follows you to hunts ( bonus: go to as few zones as possible to try to remain at lv1 )
- get said alt account full i110 gear without leveling.
- go to forums and complain that there's nothing to do in game
