I bet a lot of BLMs still don't realize how good spell speed are for them. So they will bitch.

FFXIV focuses on content mechanics and gives you a bit of grind to be able to do such contents. FFXI is focused on grind and the bosses have a bit of gimmicks. You really want more grind and less mechanics?

Not much of a gimmick when its weakness is stun, rangers, or PD.

One day there shall be another good horizontal progression game. Preferably with near infinite equipment/inventory space.

I'm okay with that as long as there's no in-battle gearswap mechanic.

FFXI isnt nowadays more grindy then FFXIV. Playing both and both seem to be on equal footing concerning grinds (minus legendary weapons)

And let's not kid ourselves: the end result of horizontal or vertical progression is the same. We get gear with better numbers, so we can kill the latest boss, so we can get the gear they drop, so we can stand in town and have randoms gawk at us. That feel when people in town stop running, turn their head towards you, and stare for a while checking your gear...that's why you do this.

It was more about a sense of accomplishment- beating a hard NM for gear that is NEEDED to be exceptional at your job or obtaining sky access or SEA.. farming pop items that required strategy and teamwork- not just dodge mechanics. beating DM for your suppa or your... joyuese... jelly ring.. defending ring.. AF2 gear, walaha turban...getting your relic

Stats meant something. It was about building your team up with the right gear and doing the right events to be competitive against really hard shit.

I don't even check peoples gear in FFXIV because stats are pointless. It just matters what your Ilvl is and if you pay attention. Saving up mythology for the same gear with higher str or VIT and learning different dodge mechanics is not what I call fun after doing it for a year...I thought they might add some new shit..but its the same garbage.

FFXIV is vaguely like WoW but WoW (even MoP) has 10x the content and more progressive steps than how FFXIV does its gear progression.

Anyway, I made a lengthy post about this before.

Here's my review of FFXIV (and comparison between FFXI and WoW).

I started summer sale and managed to beat basically everything except T7 in a few days after reaching level 50.

Granted, most of it was old content but FFXIV was out a year already and the fact the majority of the content gets finished fast is silly.

    1. Each patch takes 3 months and adds maybe 3-5 hours worth of content for even a casual guild to do. Most of it are just 10 minute fights that are completely scripted and takes a few attempts to do.

Patch 2.3 (though I did start after) added just Ramuh Extreme and ST. 3 months and it took them three months to add one ten minute fight into the game and one 20 minute mindless LFR level raid in the game.

Also FFXIV is really grindy. More so than FFXI even back then. Mindlessly roll over low level content grindy and sometimes not getting anything for it.

Relics are the biggest examples. All the way to item level 115, it's basically just doing content that is far below your low level.

Hunts are the worse form of casual content I have ever seen in any game.

ST, as I said before, I went 1/40 on a drop I wanted before.

Besides that, there's really nothing else to do.

    2. The boss mechanics in this game are really simplistic and shallow. The majority of WoW's raid have more depth and content.

Content wise, FFXIV in over a year has less content than WoW MoP has. The current coils of bahamut are like one raid tier (over the course of one year) while WoW has 2-3+ raid tiers every year. FFXI has monthly updates right now that add as much content as FFXIV adds each 3 months.

If FFXIV continues this adding only this little, then it can't compete compete with WoW. Now, I say this because I want FFXIV to be able to compete with WoW but currently, there's not as much content and in MMOs, the main thing that matters is content. Quantity over quality (TBH, the majority of content in MMOs are almost the same anyway, so quantity is definitely the focus).

However, I wouldn't say FFXIV has quality (or content with depth) either.

The jobs and interactions between jobs and other players are non-existent.

In every fight, you can ignore other players and just do whatever the boss mechanics are. In WoW, you had so many spells or ability interactions between players. In FFXI, you had things like Mantra rotations, SATA (even if outdated), skill chains (even if outdated, it is still there and something you look out for), etc.

Also there are builds and setups in FFXI and WoW. Like it was fun in Delve I and II to try to think of strategies. I mean even something as simple as adding in a Blue Mage for terror on one of the delve bosses was something fun to think about as you plan for Delve in FFXI. There's more of this too. Like instead of using SCH to stun, have Monks use Shoulder tackle to stun lock (or GEO can stun instead). There's a bit of variety.

You may not be saying that's much but it beats FFXIV's non existent variety. Again, it's not only an MMO but an RPG too. FFXIV's RPG mechanics are really shallow currently.

In World of Warcraft, there are 9 classes and 34 specializations across those classes.

That's basically 34 different classes in WoW compared to FFXIV which has (now) 10 and almost all of them are identical to each other with simplistic abilities that involve little interaction between bosses or allied players.

In FFXIV, outside of BRD, you can take basically any combination of any job to any fight and they do the exact same thing. Having 2 SCH feels no different than having 2 WHM. Same with every DPS job and every tank job.

The only thing that matters in FFXIV (very simple mechanics) is to "move here", "move there" (all scripted, easy to memorize), and that basically sums up the majority of FFXIV.

    3. Content wise, FFXIV has no variety. If you are done with weeklies (which are all mindless content and a repeat of everything else), then you are basically done with FFXIV.

WoW has way more content than FFXIV. Again, MoP alone has 5x as much content as FFXIV currently. FFXI, even if you count Seekers of Adoulin only stuff (ignoring high tier battle missions and anything that takes place outside of SoA areas) also has way more content than FFXIV.

Skirmish and Airlixir Delve gear are two excellent and fun ways to gear up.

    Delve, Incursion, Reives, exping, etc.

    Coalitions.

First, yes those may not sound like much but every dungeon in FFXIV is almost a copy and paste. This includes the three new dungeons they added this patch.

If anyone played FFXI during ToAU era, even FFXI's 50 Assaults have way more variety (and fun) than dungeons in FFXIV.

It's not fun doing any of these dungeons (which are all the same btw) or anything.

    4. Finally FFXIV forces you to (after you complete the 2.0 main story line) to do a level 35 dungeon and a low level guildhest to progress with the story line at level 50.

When I encountered that, I didn't know what to say. That describes FFXIV well (include all of its content). Relics, hunts, dungeons, raid, etc.

Here's a post Yoshida made (about Blue Mage):
    Spoiler: show

I think that blue mage is an interesting job because you can learn spells from enemies, but honestly I don't think that it really fits MMORPG party settings. If anything, I think it would work solo and it would be really fun to implement it as a job where you go around and learn abilities from every monster, so I'd definitely like to try and do this, but I'm concerned when it comes to playing in a party players would put up barriers if you haven't learned certain abilities. Additionally, in the event you are able to use abilities forever once you learn them, the difficulty of learning abilities would be high, and we wouldn't be able to balance the system so it wouldn't revolve around procuring your abilities instead of equipment. This wouldn't be practical enough to fit in an MMORPG party setting and conversely if you are swapping in only certain abilities you've learned, the true image of a blue mage would diminish, so this is something that I am concerned with.
    My response:

    1. FFXI's blue mage worked (of course he probably does know that).

    2. Though I can't find the quote but he also later said they weren't sure what role they would be. Specializations in WoW (for FFXIV) solved the problem fairly easily.

Hearing that answer, I hope there's more than this job system for FFXIV (as has little depth).

There aren't much "RPG" mechanics in FFXIV (if any). The customization in this game is the worse I have experienced in any game.

Now, again, don't get me wrong. FFXIV has the right foundations but right now, it's definitely not up to par. I only played it to check it out and it is worse than WoW and FFXI.

FFXI, you can say stun locking or RNG + PLD parties are the thing nowadays but regardless, there's much more in FFXI than FFXIV.

Delve 1 was bad in balance but Delve II (and high tier battle missions) are really good. It's fun theory crafting or trying out various job combos (yes, there are the popular job combos everyone uses but many jobs can replace the norm - RUN can easily replace anything PLD can do + now with Geo/Indi-Haste and/or Haste II, a combination of GEO, SMN, RDM, COR, DNC, can replace BRD easily).

Even Carraway said "Endgame is still somewhat shallow".

The expansion can revamp a lot of things and to be fair, they apparently have been working on the expansion since release of FFXIV.

There can be fun in FFXIV but it is really a glorified IRC chat channel right now where you can get your characters nice looking outfits but all there is it to this game currently. Not much RPG elements, not much depth. The majority of the content is the same (Dungeons are all the same, most fights are the same, most classes and jobs play the same, etc).

The reason I am posting this is because I was hyped for the game but it seemed people were having fun with the content except it turned out that you can complete the majority of content in a few days worth of PUGing. Updates have added little content over the past year. I read some reviews, watch some videos, read forums, and it seemed like FFXIV would be great (WoW + FFXI both I both like) but yet FFXIV isn't up to par with either game.

Also the only good part about the game (the various outfits and gear), is being held back the glamour system. WoW does a similar system to FFXIV but that's old. Most modern games nowadays just give you an extra set of equipment slots that affect appearance only which allows changing gear appearances a lot more easier and more customizable.

There are limitations with glamour like you can't glamour two handed weapons to look like one handed weapons (or one hand + shield, they could just make shield block if it would normally parry) or vice versa. Gear that takes up multiple slots also can't be glamour. Also a bit disappointed in that too.

tl;dr - Check back after the expansion.

You guys do realize World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI are 10 years old now right? Not counting 1.0, ARR is only a year old. 4 (?) years old if you count 1.0.

Can you compare ARR to WoW and XI at 1-2 years old instead?

1 year+ of same raid killed it for me in WoW. Even after they said they would try and push out content faster after last raid. Nope.

Not reading that wall-o-text post, but agree that current gear progression is pretty boring; though I think I'm just a dinosaur of a bygone era. I really enjoyed collecting random pieces of stuff for various situations (i.e. horizontal progression), but it just doesn't work with the established ILVL mechanic and would likely alienate more people than it attracted.

They seriously need to add Campaign to this game. A non-PVP open world cooperative event for downtime with long-term useful rewards would be awesome. I really just enjoyed partying up with random people (or playing solo) for a brief amount of time, getting waxed by Ore Lobs, and generally putzing around. The FATE mechanic is already in game, just add some more difficult ones with a unique currency.

Stats meant something. It was about building your team up with the right gear and doing the right events to be competitive against really hard shit.

I don't even check peoples gear in FFXIV because stats are pointless. It just matters what your Ilvl is and if you pay attention. your are mixing things up, if anything FFXI was alot more forgiving and you could skip alot of shit. in FFXIV its the oposite, you cant skip high end stuff like in 11, your whole group needs to be good (in terms of coil of bahamut) or EX primal fights. I dont know where you get the idea that in FFXI you needed to build up your group wiht gear, sure you had to do that there to some extend, but FFXIV is much stricter in that department. The only time this was the case in FFXI was on the initial release of Delve 1.0, otherwise there was allways a possibility to skip stuff/steps by haveing 392039203 gazillion bard songs and cor rolls on your whole ally. sure better/good gear made alot of stuff easier in FFXI, but it wasnt a necesserity like in FFXIV wiht all the DPS checks/Tank checks/healer checks.

in the end FFXI boild down to: 25% gear haste, how many brd/cor rotations can you squeeze in, and staying alive via cures or stunlocks. Doesnt sound much more challenging then FFXI with its teamrope-jumping, especially because you could cover mistakes in FFXI easily compared to 14 (with the ecxpetion of delve 1.0 on its release)

All I read what XI gets updates as large as XIV gets monthly, when I played 2 months ago, I looked at the 2 patches that came my way, none of the content interested me so I didn't do any of the new content because it wasn't required for anything to unlock after it. Great system when you can just look at the content that comes out and go eh not even worth my time. Might as well not even develop it.

Of course you can throw a bunch of gimps at mobs in final fantasy 11 and win. Just like you throw tons of people at HUNT mobs and its boring.....what is the point? I mean look at the RMTs in ffxiv... even they could do it, but they usually wiped and couldn't survive the HQ kings or harder HNMs.. The better the gear you had in FFXI the better you became at taking things down with less people and the more exciting fights became and the more sense of accomplishment there was...

FFXIV - gear doesn't not matter... hit the next ilvl.... learn the way to dodge in the next primal or coil fight... doesn't matter your party set up... no body has anything special needed for a particular fight..
