Because you can only Need stuff if you're physically on the job at the time.

If I go to an event as PLD I can't Need ARC/BRD drops even though I have it 50, I have to Greed them instead. A person without ARC even unlocked can Greed the same gear. So you can get the situation where a person who doesn't even have the job unlocked wins lot over someone with it level 50 just because they aren't on that job for the run.

We had the situation crop up for us when we took a PUG to our Coil run. I go to runs as PLD because I have to. BRD gear drops that our main BRD doesn't want. I have 50 BRD but have to Greed it as I was on PLD. PUG person also Greeds it even though he doesn't even have ARC unlocked. I won lot but the point is, he got to lot against me on equal footing via Greed even though he can't use it.

In light of the whole multiple jobs/one character thing, they really should have updated the Need/Greed system appropriately instead of just copy-pasting it from every other game.

The game should know if you have other jobs at 50 and give your RNG a boost or something when greeding on gear for those alt jobs. I mean, its w/e but still.

I would've liked to see more options

I'm on this job and I'm needing (Current Need), beats
I'm not on this job, but I have a class at the level where it can wear it, beats
I can't wear this and I'm greeding (Current Greed), beats
I'll take it, just to keep it from dropping to the ground, beats
    Pass

...but I get that's a lot of options, and not possible to detail them in a single word like "need" and "greed".

Most of the time people will pass instead of greed if you ask them about it so that you can use it. People just don't bother attempting to communicate.

Or you make your own goddamn 8-man run and you never have this problem. Even within the context of 24-man CT, my 8-man group will only ever have to worry about our own single chest. None of this is an issue if you build your own group.

If someone is DFing a CT run alone, well, yeah... you're not doing it the way SE wants you to do it. DFing is a bone they had to throw in because lacking it would have resulted in a (justifiable) shitstorm. That doesn't mean you're going to enjoy the same benefits that putting in the extra work to bring your own elite bomb squad in is going to reward you with. That's just how it goes. I don't know many games that buck the trend, and I seriously doubt we'll ever get to a loot system that has some 6+ options for casting lots to account for every possible situation.

Need/Greed would be fine if they made Greed rolls check if a person had the job at a high enough level to equip and prioritize their roll over people who hit Greed but cannot equip it.

They don't need an extra button for it, just have it check it on their end when it rolls. Have can equip people always roll 50-99 and can't equip always roll 1-49 or something.

I still like the idea that people should be able to re-run coil, but then drop rates are reduced by that percentage (7/8 for 1 re-runner, 50% for 4, etc).
I actually understand your situation rather well and I'm sorry to hear that you're in such a bind - the coil system has also more than once had me wishing that you could at least help out people.

The first people three close friends of mine and I wanted to do coil with were a little ahead of us due to their being legacy-players, and we were still in the process of finishing our relics/completing Darklight-sets when they were ready for coil. We discussed the idea of doing coil together since we had known each other for years already and at least the four of us really wanted to do coil with them. Unfortunately, they were a little too impatient and took four other guys from our FC without even asking us, leaving the four of us somewhat stranded since there weren't exactly many other people in our FC ready for coil.

Nonetheless, I went and built a new static a few weeks after that little mishap. We made some progress, albeit slow, and in our second or third week their static dissolved because, in a completely unexpected turn events, the four other guys they took in switched servers after having amassed about 60-70% of their static's drops. Admittedly, this was after one member of the static had been somewhat permanently unavailable, but there was also a minor incident in which the guy who had gotten the most drops started throwing a hissy fit because he didn't want to let the static's other maintank have the Allagan body, which probably also contributed to their decision to leave the server.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't feel a very slight hint of schadenfreude, but their disadvantageous situation has had me wishing that I could, at the very least, help them out.

Edit: By the way, I'm not even a crafter, but I love your signature.

I joined a 0/3 in progress WP on a whim tonight.

Party is PLD SMN DRG SCH(me), DRG immediately leaves as I come in. The gist of it is that the DRG apparantly took issue with the PLD "not being able to tank". Relic+1 MNK comes in for last slot, and I catch up to the PLD.

For reference, that's a level 41 sword (i43, Ancient Sword).

I tell him that he might want to invest in a better sword, and he just calmly says he's hoping for WP sword drop since he spent most of his money on relic precursor or something. I'm kind of rolling my eyes at this point, until I notice something. And it's the reason this is going here instead of in Random Fail.

He's holding hate. From both me (i55 book, AK/DL mix) and the SMN (mostly AF) going all-out with AoE DoTs, and the +1 MNK (who admittedly said they would hold back a little; was in Fists of Fire only for bosses). And this wasn't a one-off thing. He kept doing this the whole run. I would steal hate sometimes but I'm not exaggerating when I say that generally only experienced relic PLDs hold hate this well in my experience. He says he only has 2 weeks of XIV experience and a lot of tank/healer experience in several other MMOs, but I'm truly astonished.

At the end of the run, Darklight Macuahuitl actually drops for him.

BGers of Gilgamesh, keep your eye on this guy. He's going to be great when he gets geared.

Since XIV gameplay was mostly based on WoW (and other MMOs similar to it), a lot of the skills you gained from playing those translate well to this game. I main a holy paladin (healer) in WoW from Lich King to Pandaria and I jumped into healing as WHM with no problem whatsoever. Important thing is knowing all the skills at your disposal and using them correctly. Him saying he had experience with other MMOs and bringing it to this game is not surprising to me at all.

If I ever see dude I'll be sure to pass along your nice words to him.

I'm sure the guy is a great tank and all, but it isn't his job to hold hate.

If a dps takes hate, it is their fault 100% of the time, even if the tank is terrible.

If a healer takes hate, it is the dps fault 90% of the time for getting hit by shit they didn't have to be hit by and the healers fault for not letting that dps just die. The other 10% is when the tank is terrible.

Just saying, you probably had good dps.

Excited for Crystal Tower and the other goodies, despite the lockout which doesn't bother me tbh I'm still enjoying the game. Feels good knowing I don't need to be logged in every day spamming content in order to keep up with people. Plus I can play other games and hang out with friends more. Good job SE.

This game has not 1, but 2 threat meters.

One is color coded and the other has a bar.

In 11 I had a regen only policy for dps, I still have it and its a great way to train them.

I wouldn't put all the blame on the DPS or not blame the tank at all, but at least for the DPS there's a hate meter - if you're close to pulling hate, you already know that your tank cannot keep up. If you continue at the same pace anyway, then you deserve to be smacked. Granted, this primarily applies to situations in which you're working with a tank you don't know. On the other hand, that's good practice for newer tanks. Having friends that made my life as a tank hell on earth certainly helped me figure out how to keep hate.

The "I did it just like this in XI guys" comment makes me wonder, since the definition of tank in that game for anything regen only was okay for was "the guy who can do the most DPS" and pulling hate in those circumstances was almost always best solved by some form of "do even more DPS."

Which, btw, is my strategy (BEST STRATEGY, ALWAYS) for this game as well
