I never defeated Titan, hell only 3 missions past Ifrit, and am currently a SMN.

Did you do the second SMN quest? That's what he means by Titan, first quest requires Ifrit.

Yeah, SMN unlock only grants Ifrit-Egi. The other Egis presumably require you to reach that respective part of the storyline (or further job quests, who knows). The implication here is that upon first unlocking SMN, your Summon1 is still going to be Emerald Carby, your Summon2 is still going to be Topaz Carbuncle. It's kind of explained in the SMN unlock quest.

I got destroyed a few times on that last quest, but I have no gear at all (AH weapon/cheap accessories/4 pieces AF). I couldn't find any decent potions either like X-potion. Any tips if you got through it? I've been dropping the healer ASAP and getting rid of the other adds while rotating defensive cooldowns, but just can't get them all down fast enough.

I basically just ruined the healer's shit asap while dodging all of the AOE attacks. The charge-up AOE is probably the biggest source of damage. So healer then the lancer and/or THM (iirc) then the MRD and finally the main guy. Don't use your own AOE, better to focus down one. Use all of your abilities, I guess? I burned every defensive CD I had, used Fists of earth, and just did my best. I died at least twice, but that was mostly getting caught by AOE and not focusing the right targets.

A bit late but, like I said, the second quest requires Titan's defeat and the third likely Garuda's. The Egis are unlocked by clearing the job quests after defeating the primals in the main storyline.
