I just don't find it particularly effective, has a long cast time and the radius is rather small, unless you know a large number of enemies are going to stay put for an extended period of time (rather than get picked off 1 by 1 in relatively short order) it's hard to justify casting VS just tossing out Bio + Ruin to quicken the 1 by 1 killing process.

Using sacred soil just makes you feel badass, remember the LL 1.0 opening CS bit when Y'shtola (sp) throws up the barrier to protect you from the mobs pouring in?

It was used a lot in promo material before launch and people were like "will we get to do shit like that?" and Tanaka was like "um yea....suuuuure you will".

Sacred Soil is pretty much the closest we've come to that. It just feels cool throwing down this big flashy ring of "chill, I got you dawg".

Totally agree, too bad the effect is more over time than a direct AOE shield.

I'm curious what everyone's DoT rotation is. For example, I just noticed that the tooltip for Thunder says:
Deals lightning damage with a potency of 30.
Additional Effect: Lightning damage over time
    Potency: 35
    Duration: 18s
Additional Effect: 5% chance after each tick that potency of next Thunder, Thunder II, or Thunder III will be 240, have no cast time, and cost no MP
    Duration: 12s

And I wondered whether it made sense to always apply Thunder first (on your first target), so you can maximize the frequency of its application to take advantage of the additional effect.
What's everyone's take on this? What's your go-to DoT rotation?

That additional effect only applies to a THM/BLM as it is an effect added by one of it's traits.

I do Miasma > Bio II > Bio > (wait) > Miasma > Bio > (wait) > (repeat from beginning) because I've gotten used to that order from playing solo. Mainly SCH so I don't often have time for Miasma II and Shadow Flare is kind of "whenever I can afford to".

In groups you should always do Bio first, you generally get less mileage out of your DoTs since stuff dies faster and Bio is the strongest in terms of damage/tic and has the bonus of being insta-cast.

Doh.. and I thought I stumbled on something fantastic..

Prioritizing Bio over Bio2 does make sense for things that die quicker. But perhaps Miasma + Bio2 makes sense for the 2nd and 3rd targets. Hmm...

Bio to me is only a quicker claim on mobs and if pet is set to Sic, much easier to Bio than

    Target mob
    Issue Sic command
    And casting

Also Bio + Bane will grand you more point in Fate, since they died fast, and sooner second spell casting they are dead...
Not best but an only good way to get more points in Fate post lvl 30.

    Thanks for this tip!
So to the Scholars out there, how much micromanaging do you do for Selene's skills? I hear her AI for the buffs is wonky. Do you keep her on "Obey" and then hotbar the haste/spellcast skills? Or does "Steady" work as well?

Kind of a broad question, but does SCH just feel straight up inferior to WHM when it comes to solo healing in 4man or is that just me? Having near-limitless MP doesn't seem to mean as much when tanks are getting hammered and/or AoE is getting spammed. Having to babysit the fairy (or let it die or resummon it) in certain fights is also annoying.

My healing training starts from Brayflox lol
Now that I managed to utilise Adloquium, Eye for an Eye and Physick.
Normal mobs I throw Adloquium and following with DoTs, and leaving healing to Eos. Since Selena haven't got haste yet.
For boss, I'll mix Adloquium , E4E and Spam Physick mainly. Aether flow here and there, Energy Drain whenever I can.
I could be doing it wrong, but so far... Everything is still working fine. im sure there is space to improve.
and or Unless DPS is low dmg or tank never moves boss away from poison floor, then MP dried and wiped is the case.

As SCH in 4-man I typically open with Bio II > Miasma > Bio > Bane (in this order because of the DoT durations), then simply keep the tank healed while sneaking in a Ruin or two if there is time. Sometimes the tank takes so much damage early I can't finish the combo before having to briefly interrupt it for healing. Usually the dots fall off before the whole pack is dead, in which case I reapply, again with Bane if needed. Obviously, this also doesn't work if the party insists on sleeping mobs.

I don't actually have an Arcanist (well, unless Level 1 counts) but I figured I'd ask on the Arcanist thread : exactly what role does the Arcanist play? Last I heard, they could heal, they have a pet, they can do DPS in the form of DoTS...I'm kind of confused.

Can they really do this and all at higher levels? Wouldn't they be outmoded by more specialized jobs?

Arcanist branches out with jobs. Summoner is a Dps class, although it still has its heal and buff, but they're not that important for it. It being a good Dps is a different story. Scholar is a healer and manages that role quite well

Sacred Soil is actually the spell Louisoix uses to protect everyone from Bahamut's attacks (well, a weaker version of it). He has the mark of Thaliak the Scholar so it makes sense. I'm pretty sure Y'shtola uses something else.

Hmm, so Arcanist can both DPS and heal at higher levels? That's quite a potent combination.

Er, SCH can main heal and SMN can DPS, yes. Not like they can do both at once.

Overall Scholar seems like a very strong healer right now, I am currently sitting at around 390 mind and healing does not seem an issue what so ever (Amdapor Keep/GarudaHM tries), the only issue I can see is Adloquium seems kind of pointless to use in combat it seems more of a pre combat cast ability. The mana cost to heal is too high and the shield only last 1 hit before it is done, you may aswell do a Succor for a smaller shield but hits everyone for any premptive damage due to be taken for much better MP efficiency.

Scholar also seems to have crazy MP efficiency in the way it heals, for me to run out of MP I must be doing something severly wrong or the fight will end up being a wipe anyways as people stood in things they shouldn't.

Can anyone with WHM at 50 say what their base mind stat is at 50? I have a feeling Scholar scales to similar amounts of Mind levels as WHM just through levelling so the traits we get are not as much as an issue.

Pets can be a pain in the ass and it would be great if they could add a toggle ability to them a bit like WoW where you can either choose from insta cast or self cast. What would be nice aswell is if you select Place the pet went back to the position if knocked back as right now it will stay wherever knocked back to.

It's been said in here before and iwoke me up about strong sub class skills but level THM to 26 for Swiftcast, this ability is god tier right now and make the most of it before it gets nerfed.
