Also, healing doesn't seem to count for much unless you're in a group so if you're tanking and one rolls up and invites you, please accept or they may just let your ass die. (For fates with only a couple people at em)

Its threat based as mentioned above.
So how to create obscene threat as a healer.
Before lv30
Put in Flash
sprint and flash large amount of mobs -> cure bomb yourself or someone, anyone doesn't matter -> prepare to be raped by a ton of mobs. (or as mentioned jump around and spam flash on as many things as possible constantly.
If you live, gold medal. Probably get gold medal dead too.
The flash method does not work well, with single target, infact its terrible, it is best to cure bomb the shit out of the tank if solo.
or lv 31+ on sch I use bane to aoe tag, and then use the pet heal/self heal/tank heal and got gold mostly.
whm, could just sit and spam holy, and before it do something similar to the sch, or switch to CNJ mode, sub flash and do as sub 30's till at a level with holy.
Once you get used to living dangerously and throwing yourself into suicidal situations where sprint is required to survive, you can get a ton of exp solo in fates.
solo fate claims on mobs 5+ levels over you, chains into the 1,000's for exp per mob. Having a low latency to the server helps ninja claim also...! (and swift cast).
Lol fair enough, just simpler partied up. Also knowing where mobs spawn is bonus. Claim a lot with miasma 2 as well.
I do the same solo, between my low latency ad remembering where things spawn, you can get pretty high chains and exp per mob into the 1,000's range, making a single fate around 30,000 exp range.
as for that exploited fate over at Ceruleum area, because of it, fates were taken down to 15min, I will not be suprised if fate mobs become 0exp next because of the abuse.
I'm probably doing something wrong, but I wanted to see what all the fuss was about with fate grinds, so before I logged off I joined an 8 group at 30 and did some wineport runs. After about ~10 runs of getting 4.5~6k gold medals I was disappointed and did a few solo. I got the same amount of xp regardless of being solo or in a pt.
The only difference between being in a party and being solo (besides the obvious one of potentially being healed and/or having people to heal) are...
1) Your entire party's FATE contribution is added together, so it's easier to get gold. This also means you can show up late-ish and still get gold super easy.
2) Since there's more people, you'll have a greater chance of getting claim and getting the raw kill exp (not a huge deal, but it's there).
My WHM has a really hard time getting gold medals on things like Cancer or Gorgimera without being in a party, but yes, if you're able to get golds solo, there isn't too much draw to being in a party.
It also means more at 45+ when your best bet is North Thanalaan and everyone and their mother has AoE out the asshole so good luck claiming anything before it explodes in a fine mist of rainbow sparkles.
I like Costa Del Sol around 35. Also a lot of sidequests to do while you wait.
