Simplifying targeting while using the controller

I found a topic on Gfaqs which provided some hints as to how to make things easier for myself :

    http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/67805...eborn/67011000

but I don't quite understand this part :

    >go into the controller config and go to the presets thing and turn the first section >off and the >second section on then you can choose what your d -pad targets by >pressing L1 +[ ] /\ X O ,so >you set it to enemies and the left and right on dpad >will only target enemies while up and down >will scroll through party.

What exactly is he saying? Is it the "enable customization" part of the menu? The in-game menu says to use L1 + a bumper button to scroll through the targets, but my L1 button is currently set as the button that activates my hotbar.

I am kind of confused. Can anyone clarify or provide more tips on easier targeting for controllers? Because FATEs are a pain right now having to press right or left 20 times to get to the mob I want.

I think I found it in system > character configuration > controls > filters.

Not positive and can't test it right now, though.

Question in the same vein as OP. If your targeting something but turn around you will automatically target what you're facing. Anyway to turn this off?

I'm not sure of what you're describing, you shouldn't lose target when changing the direction you or the camera are facing.

If you have movement settings set to standard try setting it to legacy, it's generally more controller friendly.

Anyone have a clue how I get it to stop targeting the closest carbuncle/fairy/other summon when I press X on my DS3 controller, instead of the NPC or mob in front of me? I've looked in the targeting filter section, so I'm either blind, stupid, or both.

Idk how you could miss it, it's the first thing there under filters, check what you want/don't want to target when idle/weapon drawn.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Guess I'll ask this again in here. I play the pc with a ps3 controller. Back in 1.0 I was able to set my ventrilo button to the ps button. Can't for the life of me figure out how I did that, nor can I see anything that tells me on the interwebs.

If someone figures out how, let me know. D:

[edit] someone else mentioned in that game fag thread which I found easier is if you hold down L2 or R2 you can tab target enemies using the L1 and R1 buttons.

Yeah, that works especially well if you have it set to toggle so you don't have to hold it down.

I pretty much exclusively target via r1 now.

I looked again, and it appears that there isn't a specific "summon" category, they are just registering as "NPC". Unfortunately, if I still want to be able to select npc quest givers with "X", there's no way to have it not target carby first if he's in the way.

Ya, as long as you are holding down L2 or R2, it's basically old school FF style to target mobs with L1/R1, and then up and down directional pad for pt.

Idk if this is specific to controller setup or not but I still target minions despite not having them checked as targetable under any circumstances.

I haven't played with it yet, but don't forget there are 4 custom targeting modes you set and switch between on the controller (selected by button combination). That doesn't solve the problem that summons are NPC's. I seriously hope they consider grouping them with the minion category.

Niiro, I *think* that grouping adds those crossbars to the cycling either 1) only outside of combat or 2) both inside and outside of combat. I can't remember which.

Basically I set half my crossbars to be in combat only, and half to outside of combat only (those are also set to share between classes). The switch between the two is actually much nicer than I anticipated, and the only downside is occasionally I get burned with the weapon auto-sheathing right before I go to execute an attack (which ends up being my sprint button, which I really should change). I upped the delay before this happens last night and haven't run any dungeons since to see if it's enough or not.

While I'm making a bunch of edits, one of the few other controller-related things I'd like to see changed/added is that I'd like the traditional crossbars to be selectable with the back button like other UI elements are. Even though it'd take a handful of button presses to get to them, it'd still be nice for the things like gear sets and other rarely-used actions.

Finally, one trick I've been using (to modest success) is that I have one hotbar (not crossbar) that has a basic GCD ability on it floating up near the middle of the screen (near my target bar and some other stuff). This is purely to keep the GCD better in my peripheral vision. I don't need to look down at my cross bar to know which action I'm going to hit next, but this is a good deal easier on my eyes than darting back down constantly to make sure of my timing.

I also keep a couple of actions with independent cooldowns on a hotbar just to keep an eye on them, and only switch to that crossbar to activate them as needed instead of switching back and forth to see if the ability is ready or not.

It allows you to customize which cross bar will be displayed when your weapon is sheathed (one u have in red) and when in combat (the second group)

W/e xbars you have clicked in the top category will be available when not in combat, if the xbar is clicked for both it will be displayed in either mode.

Just curious, are you guys using the PS3-style main menu or the micro-menu? I go back and forth and can't decide which I like more.

I use the ps3 style, but I play with a ps3 controller on the pc. Micro menu is way too slow with a controller imo.
