A threat is a threat. You see a roach, you bug (hehe) the fuck out. Most have no qualms with squashing it. The people in India likely feel the same way about a giant cat dragging people away and eating their fellow villagers.

Even if you sit down and explain to someone that a certain spider species is completely harmless, their instinct is to kill it. Immediately. Leave no survivors. Nuke it from orbit.

Setting a captured snake on fire and watching as if you are at a concert, and recording it with cheers would be equally terrible. Same with insects, they are harmful, you kill them but only weirdos rip their legs/arms off and torture insects. Which is again, bad.

Like I said earlier, "nuking it from orbit" would be acceptable, but this shit is not. I'd be much, much more understanding if they delivered it a deathblow, thinking that it could hurt people (it couldn't, it was captured, on its way out of the town)

KOTDWAR (Uttarakhand): A leopard was allegedly burnt alive by some villagers in Dhandhar area of Pauri Garhwal district, forest officials said.

The incident occurred on March 23 in Kalagarh forest division when forest officials, including divisional forest officer (DFO), were transporting a leopard, trapped and caught by villagers.

A leopard, ventured into the village after stalking cows, was trapped inside a cowshade by villagers and later handed over to the forest officers in Rikhanikhal development block of the district, they said.

However, when DFO Surendra Kumar of Kalagarh forest division along with police were carrying the animal, some villagers suddenly came and threw petrol on the caged leopard and burnt him alive, officials said.

The efforts of forest and police officials to save the leopard went in vain, police said.

The body of the leopard has been brought to Ratuadhab forest office for postmortem, they added.

"Stern action will be taken against the culprits," Chief Conservator of wildlife S Chandola said.

This is the whole story, it was already under control of the wildlife people, on its way out of the town until a couple of townsfolk burnt him as he apparently hurt a couple of cows (which are sacred in India, so I have heard). Nothing has happened to a single human being.

So back to insects, no, no sane person would do something like this to insects too.

I didn't say what they did was right but the response on how people view animals varies with the culture you're speaking about. Westerners get up in arms and violent if you post pictures of even jesting about harming cats/dogs/domesticated pets but we're fine with factory farming pigs and cows for our personal consumption. There was no reason for a captured tiger to be burned alive but at the same time there is no reason to kill harmless spiders when they crawl in from outside.
