While tumult can be an issue, more often than not it's topping the tank off before mountain buster. That's been 90% of the wipes after heart that I've been in. For whatever reason it just never happens. 3 healers seems to fix that.

PUG tanks probably don't rotate their abilities properly either. In fact I am gonna say that that is likely issue and it is just as much a problem as one or two poor healers. You can't just stack everything, need to play more intelligently than that.
Doing pld next for this, what's the rotation you usually do? Is mountain buster blockable? I usually do rampart > foresight > sentinel > bulwark/awarness as a usual rotation for normal things(nub maybe? I duno!). Hallowed ground is usually the oh shit button.
You can do it a number of different ways and yes it is blockable/parryable as far as I remember (haven't tanked it in like 2 weeks). I like to do the longer cooldowns/High potential DR first so:
Sentinel > Bulwark > Rampart > Foresight/Awareness/Bloodbath. I save Hallowed for ohshit/final push. Tank LB3 is useful as well in similar situations.
BLM/SMN/SCH/WHMs could also help the tank (and party) by tossing in a Virus on Titan for Mountain Buster/Tumults and ninjaing an Eye for an Eye on the tank during the parts where you're dodging and can't dps. Having a BRD Rain of Arrows for the -10% damage received also helps. It's a shame but shit like that is rarely seen in PUGs.
Eye for an Eye is an instant ability; should be pretty easy to get it on there, though the unreliability of the damage mitigation is unlikely to make or break the fight. Rain of Death should absolutely be used often; it reduces Tumult damage as well which is nice.
Can always suggest it but naturally it's 50/50 whether you get a "hm, never thought of that before, sure" or "that's an AoE I'm not wasting my TP my 12.95 fuckoff -drools-".
In addition, WHM can pre-Stoneskin the tank for every Mountain Buster. SCH can also do it if they slot it (albeit a weaker version due to not having the trait) but I find myself being lazy when I'm on SCH and just casting a pre-shield.
SCH can drop Sacred Soil for that and stomps as well. There are a lot of ways to deal with all the final phase damage that average PUG groups don't have right off the bat.
Single best way to win that fight is for healers to be proactive on AOE heals before the stomps even occur. During last phase, Medica II should be casting before the stomp animation even starts; it allows you A) to stay ahead of the damage in case you have a low DPS group whose stomp count is high enough to be fatal, and B) it lets you GTFO for plumes at the end easier. Every PUG I've tried, healer doesn't know move order, Tumult starts, there's a ~4 second lag until people are in and AOE cures start being casted, and things go downhill from there.
Yeah when I won tonight we got it down before stomp damage was becoming a issue. Seriously its amazing how much better a group becomes when you coordinate through something like vent. We were getting pretty far before wipes and then everyone jumped on my FCs vent channel and we won the very next attempt.
Have seen a SCH solo heal it (not something I'd recommend doing though, felt like every Tammault was a close call to a wipe). 3 heals is definitely over kill.
I don't sacred soil stomps, I generally spend all my aetherflow charges on Lustrates on the tank to make sure he's topped off before and after mountain busters. Stomps aren't an issue anyway, unless someone died and has rez sickness(in which case I tend to stoneskin them before the next stomp anyway). Also Sacred soil forces people to stick together and not a big fan of that. If you sacred soil the tank for the mountain buster then some people can use it for the stomp after when it's that rotation, but still Lustrate does a lot more for the tank than Sacred Soil. I use it in the early phases when there's nothing else to use Aetherflow on anyway.
Virus(+Fever) before the buster > stomp is pretty nice too, but timing needs to be good for it to last on both, or you need to cast it after the cleave which means you can't lustrate as fast so it can be risky.
In all cases, as a SCH tank healing is probably the easier part of the fight, and what's annoying when you're solo(because other healer died) is the stomps and getting everyone back up to full after them with Succor being pretty shitty and fairy aoe being too high cd. Tank healing in comparison is super easy, Adloquium the tank after cleave+lustrate+fairy heal=tank topped off and 600-700shield on, then Adloquium again+Lustrate or if he used a strong cd like Sentinel, just Physick and move on.
On the other hand as a WHM, I find the stomps to be the easy part(Medica 2 before hand for HoT then just Medica 1 once, twice if it's a later stomp and that's it) and healing the tank the harder part since the only instant heal is on a 5min cd so you have to be spamming the tank and have regen still running to make sure he doesn't get owned. Absolutely hate WHM though cause oom unless bard. Stupid Shroud is garbage(for mana, it's insanely good for threat).
Maybe Sacred Soil isn't ideal for stomps when solo healing, but I sure hope people don't get the idea that Sacred Soil during stomps isn't a good thing to do. The rules are different when you solo heal but let's not throw good sense out of the window.
