Moral of the story: use auto-face with legacy controls.
Moral of the story: use auto-face with legacy controls.
I just fell off after a Geocrush in easy mode. Proof this fight is still too hardcore for XI players
Is there an argument against using auto-face, period? I can't think of a situation where I'd want it off on either control scheme.
I got dropped after a Jump once because I was watching TV and forgot to take two steps forward. I also auto-ran into Demon Wall's battlefield and right off the edge of the platform for the same reason. Good times.
It would be disorienting for standard if you didn't use rightclick to move.
I can appreciate wanting to turn midcast, but citing "casting on the move" as a reason against Legacy+autoface is kind of dumb. That's one of the biggest pros about it.
Actually, I've turned autoface off on Standard. Here's why:
Titan fight on SMN.
I leave Garuda in the backfield, occasionally repositioning her because if she gets knocked outside of the arena, the AI will glitch out. But more often than naught, she will be in a position such that she is not in the field of vision between me and Titan.
Once I have to start repositioning myself due to Weight, Landslide, etc, if I use an an ability to buff my pet (eg. Spur), my character will orient back to my pet. While moving, my character will keep this orientation, even if I am holding down the right mouse button and have my camera oriented toward a different direction. Thus my movement ends up being not what I wanted, and I may get nailed by a mechanic.
Keep in mind that this is not a knock on Legacy + Autoface, but only Standard + Autoface.
If anyone on sargatanas is doing a titan HM and have room I'd love to join (PLD). Probably the wrong place to ask, but meh. I'm sad at how ridiculously easy this is on tanks, whereas I must depend on the other 7 to not get knocked off/blown up. Had too many groups that always have that 1 person destroying the entire groups synergy, with them eventually giving up.
Would love to get this out of the way so I don't have to see the duty clogging the right side of my screen.
Yes, as a healer I find auto-face useless, because you can cure without facing the target. All of my nukes/dots are set to macros with <tt> and auto-face in them and either prepping focus target or doing /focustarget <tt> allows you to watch when DoTs need to go back up, or Virus needs to go on.
I also use Standard setting.
I played years and years and years of XI, and ofc never used the mouse in that game. But since then I played years of WoW/Rift/Aion/etc etc and find it natural now to hold right click + strafe. Then again, my mouse is on max sensitivity, so maybe that's the thing. Like, you can move the pointer across the screen in the space of an inch on the mousepad.
A good friend of mine was a god in XI, but is struggling to stay out of the red here. He never got into WoW/etc; maybe I'll suggest Legacy controls to him.
Just to clarify how I [personally me, just an opinion etc] deal with this and do it on standard.
Right mouse button is held down almost all the time, which is just my habit from a dozen other MMOs. Turn (with mouse, not keyboard) 90 deg, and strafe away. Benefit is that I'm still facing the mob by being 90 deg sideways instead of facing away from it. If that sort of thing matters for any reason. I might as well bind 'S' to some other action, I never press it unless I'm tanking and I walked too far under something to hit (seems to happen on Titan's heart).
Only thing I dislike about auto-face is that it's somewhat buggy. It's happened quite a few times where I'll be running back so I'll be facing away from the mob, but occasionally I won't auto-face the target when I cast a spell and end up interrupting my spell.
This is what I'm talking about. Does Legacy behave differently? Kiting with standard + auto-face is really annoying because you keep losing your momentum to the automatic turns. You'll keep your movement direction much more easily by running in one direction, jumping, spinning in the air while spamming your instant cast ability and reorienting yourself before landing. This let's you briefly face backwards without ever stopping your movement away from the target, but it doesn't work properly with standard + auto-face.
With Legacy+autoface I usually leftorrightclick+A or D (or W but then don't need click), use any while-moving instant, no change in direction or momentum. This is pretty normal. No awkward diagonals that make you backpedal or anything unless you change left/right to be STRAFE instead of MOVE/TURN. You want the latter in Legacy mode. Strafe+back is backpedal in Legacy.
Can't be said enough. Big thanks again to fereydoon and his people for letting me grab a clear off big ugly. Hoping I don't touch him again soon outside of helping friends and such.
