Who is Shantae? Why, she's the star of our game! She’s a human/genie hybrid (a Half-Genie) who hair-whips monsters with her ponytail, and belly dances to transform into magical creatures. She explores Sequin Land, solves labyrinths, trashes epic bosses, and foils the busty buccaneer Risky Boots, always managing to save the day! She's been featured in three daring adventures, all designed exclusively for Nintendo handhelds. Now Shantae's headed for the living room, but her core gameplay elements will remain intact:

-Whipping! Destroy monsters, topple bosses, and solve puzzles with your hair

-Belly Dancing! Dance to transform into a variety of creature forms

-Platforming! Run and jump through deviously designed levels

-Exploring! Navigate a world of interconnected levels and Labyrinths

-Customizing! Earn new abilities, unlock stat-boosting artifacts, magic & costumes

-Storytelling! Flirtatious characters and wonderfully off-beat humor

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero continues the tradition of action/adventure in the spirit of Metroid, Castlevania, and the Legend of Zelda. Our goal is to introduce Shantae to a whole new audience with a fresh art style and a brand spanking new storyline. As always, we're putting pitch perfect controls in the front seat.

Pretty adorable if you ask me. I hear the earlier games are quite well received. Worth $15.

Skullgirls' lead animator revealed to be working on the project

Mariel Cartwright, the lead animator behind Skullgirls, is involved with Shantae Half-Genie Hero, WayForward Technologies have announced.

Cartwright, during her time off from Skullgirls, created all of the “rough animation” for Shantae’s new HD animation, including ready stances, hair-whips, running, jumping, ducking, crawling and more.

W-A-R-N-I-N-G-! Tie down your inner fanboy… We’re pleased to announce that Mega Man developer Inti Creates is working on Shantae: Half-Genie Hero! If you’re not familiar with Inti Creates, they’re the studio behind Mega Man 9 & 10, the Mega Man Zero Series on Game Boy Advance, and Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent... and now Mighty No. 9!

In September of 2011, mysterious Shantae fan art appeared in the gallery of Inti Creates employee Makoto Yabe (aka KOU). At KOU’s suggestion, Matt Bozon reached out to Inti Creates President and CEO Takuya Aizu to see if his studio would like to collaborate on Shantae. By the end of the year, Inti Creates was hired-on for Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, and has since continued on with Shantae: Half-Genie Hero.

Inti Creates has developed key artwork, concepts, and character illustrations for the Shantae series; many of which you’ve already seen both here, and in our 3DS PAX demo. We are thrilled to finally reveal them as official members of the Half-Genie Hero team.

At this time we’d like to extend a very heart-felt thank you to Keiji Inafune and his team for their support! Mr. Inafune has been an inspiration to us for many years, and we’re extremely excited to see his project come to fruition. Sorry for triple posting but I wanted to say one more thing.

First...

We got 4 stretch goals! This is awesome because we now have TWO extra chapters, Risky mode, AND some pretty sweet costumes for Shantae that give different stats and abilities. For example, Beach Shantae can throw beachballs and sunbathe to get health back. But that's not all...

We also got two awesome free DLC costume changes for both Shantae and Risky, as well as a cross-over weapon from another awesome game. Sweet!

But the best news of all is that while the Kickstarter campaign is over, the race to stretch goals is not. WayForward is keeping the PayPal part of the campaign open for a few months. We're only 90k away from getting three new playable characters. Keep spreading the word!

Here are the possible transformations that are being designed. Backers can vote on which ones we want in the game. Plus, each new story chapter gets a new transformation!

Ended up backing within the last 8 hours. They had a pretty cool stream going where they took questions over the chat, and played through what felt like their entire Wayforward game library.

Was also great to see that Virt is a pretty chill person, taking in questions like it's no one's business. Fucking love his game OSTs.

If you've never played the GBC version on GBA holy shit is it good. I'm playing it now and I keep trying to use the shoulder buttons, thinking it's a a GBA title. Fluid animation, beautifully vivid sprites, 100% responsive, yet complex controls, epic OST, this game was ahead of its time.

The GBC version is the only first installment of the series. As far as I can tell there hasn't been a remake of it. (yet)

I'm trying to make sense of this sentence but I can't. You can buy the original GBC version off the eShop today. There is no need to pirate it.
