Ranged DPS vs Melee DPS

Recently I've heard quite a few people in chat/parties/FC bitching about ranged DPS versus melee DPS. They seem to think that melee DPS is severely gimped compared to ranged because well, one is ranged, and therefore can DPS more safely. In addition, Bard has Shadowbind and buffs, Black Mage has Sleep, Summoner has a pet.

To that I would say that Monk has Greased Lightning and Dragoon has Leg Sweep (among other considerations) Also, it may just be that they can't play their classes properly and are just complaining. (some were tanks whose party wiped)

So, I turn to you, wise men and women of the BG boards, to answer the question. Which do you think is better? My gut tells me there are simply pros and cons to each.

You forget that blm/smn has to be rooted in place to cast, more so blm than anything else. It really comes down to the fight. If you're constantly dodging attacks everywhere on the battle field then melee dps will probably take the lead. If you can just stand back and burn down something blm will probably take the win since we have infinite mp.

Dodging shouldn't really be a consideration, MNK/DRG have no excuse to not do more damage. BRD can do really good damage as well and they have the added benefit of never being rooted. BLM having to dodge anything on a regular basis makes them top lel at best.

Duno if I can agree with blm being lol damage when dodging stuff. Doing chimera right now, as an example, and my fire I does 590~/850~ and fire III does 850~/1.1k~. That's without raging strikes, which usually bumps up the damage 150-200 damage. And I can infinitely spam them basically. Only stop to drop a bliz III > thunder I and back to spamming. For most runs I need to hold back because I'm about to pull hate

Take this fight to titan and I'm still doing great dps even though I have to deal with latency issues regarding wrath of the land. I need to start running before it pops so I don't get hit. Other than landslide, I'm firing away the entire time, even during bombs when most dps are stuck away from titan waiting for them to blow up.

Also, why is BRD good? The songs seem underwhelming since there I haven't seen a great need for MP/TP regen yet. Elemental resistance debuff is only good if your DPS is BLM or MNK.

My friend thoroughly enjoys Army's Paeon as warrior. I'll turn it on for a few second if we're fighting a lot of mobs so he can use as much tp as he wishes, or if he ran out during a long fight.

High DPS, ranged attacks, everything is instant so you can do full dps while moving, no attacks that require you to have certain positioning
