How do I run backwards without having to turn the character around? It makes it hard to dodge skills when you can't just run backwards. What am I missing?

Enable Legacy type controls under character settings.
This. I've had the same issue when I switched from gamepad to KB/M (so much better for combat). There doesn't seem to be a way to run away without doing a quick spin with your mouse with Standard controls. Legacy controls is awkward at first but as a tank it feels infinitely better than standard controls once you get used to only using your mouse for camera movement.
Fucking awesome. After the year I spent in 1.0 it was impossible to get used to the new system.
I can't test this from work, but since 'v' reverses the camera it might be possible to hold v' in conjunction with 'w' to effectively quick-turn and run forward without the backpeddle using standard controls. Wouldn't hold my breath though, not to mention the claw-hand effect even if it were to work.
Unfortunately you'll still run forward/walk backward with the camera reversed.
Strafing works. If you know which way you're going to need to move, angle yourself in advance to where the mob is at your side, then strafe away. This way you're moving away at run speed but always facing the mob.
I tested this legacy setting and I do like it (it's just easier). Will have to think about if I want to use it while tanking as I don't like my back to the mobs.
I hold my right mouse button down the entire time I'm fighting something. Gives you the ability to move in any direction instantly, and it also lets you attack constantly if you keep the auto-face target option selected because having the mouse clicked instantly realigns your axis along your running route so it doesn't interrupt where you're headed. Tough to explain without giving it a shot; I'll have to try legacy controls, but I've gotten used to this and it works well for me.
Yeah, I'm worried about this in the HNM scene. Sometimes my mouse gets squirrely when I try to run and I start doing the stupid sidestrafe, which typically isn't enough movement to dodge a full 360 AOE, when I just want to straight up run backwards.
The game really need a back-dash mechanic for each class.
This is more of a camera question than a movement question but is there a way to make the 1st person viewing angle work like it did in XI/1.0?
ie. Such that it doesn't turn your character only the direction of your view and auto-centers itself to straight ahead once you stop pressing a direction.
Dragging your left mouse button should alter your viewing angle only, then hitting forward (movement) should realign it. I don't think there's a way to auto-realign after you release the mouse button, but I never play in first person.
I just re-mapped my keyboard to mimic ffxi controls. I use the numpad for movement (mouse as secondary for when not in combat) and have NUM5 as lock on/lock off. NUM1 and NUM3 strafe left and right, so when I need to get out of an aoe or cone attack I just quickly unlock and strafe away ... old-school I know, but I didn't have to completely relearn how to move in combat from ffxi and it works great for me. To each his own I guess.
I completely remapped ala ffxi as well so I can do gathering with one hand. If tab targeting wasn't completely bullshit a quarter of the time I wouldn't even be using the mouse anymore.
