He let her go -- floated off into the great unknown. Just stop it, stop it now.

I think it's a silly assumption that someone has to die for it to be a big plot twist. That works in shows like Game of Thrones and Walking Dead, but really has no business to be happening in a long running comedy series like HIMYM. They already had a secondary character die in Marshall's dad. I think that's as far as they will go.
Seriously, all these theories are getting borderline absurd now, lol
Let's just enjoy the series for what it is and stop looking too deep into it~
As far as the Robin and her mom thing at the end.. her mom had just spent the entire episode basically describing Barney to a T, so I mean.. RIP Robin's sanity lol

Seriously, why does anyone have to die? It's kind of a feel-good comedy show, I highly doubt they will end it by killing off one of the main characters just to make a plot twist in the LAST FRIKKIN' EPISODE of the show. This isn't a show like Lost where the entire premise of the show is the shock factor.
If it absolutely HAS to end with a plot twist, it's probably going to be Robin finding out she's pregnant even though she was told she can't have kids, or something like that.
or there's no mother, no kids, no marshall or lily or barney or robin, just the insane ramblings of someone in a mental institution
Or child protection came after the first season to take the children away for negligence since he's obviously failed in his role as a father, and now he's locked up in a mental institution telling the story to his psychiatrist or fellow patients?
Or maybe the plot twist is him saying "Kids, it is true, that is where I met your mother, and had I only dared to speak to her that day both of you would be real, but now I'm alone and sad. I guess the moral of the story is 'Dare to take a chance'"
