I don't mark, but I do appreciate when folks kill the birds first in Fractals so I don't have to stun Furore. Same goes for people who naturally kill the four bees in Neverreap in any order that doesn't have all four bees hitting ~20% simultaneously. Neither is necessary in a dungeon given how easy they are, but it bothers me as a tank to take unnecessary damage.

I used to mark the exploding guy in AK hard boss 2 and the Harriers in SV Hard that summon another dragon.

This is how you dps in dungeons with markers. It's beautiful. Hell even if dots tick on 3 alone, fighting 1 after hate is on 2, 3 goes for you soon enough.

edit; as much fun as it is to not care of order, mobs like bees/those birds they gotta go down first. I don't want to wipe and take longer etc.

Only thing I really mark currently are those Tarkus or w/e mobs near the end of Neverreap since they can do an instant attack that'll inflict vulnerability up if left up too long. It's not as bad as what the bees can do but it helps make those last pulls a bit safer and easier on the healer.

Love pulling hate on BRD because tanks expect me not to multi-DoT groups of mobs and spam Rain procs.

No, I'm not sucking and slowing down the entire run so you can afk tank.

I like marks... I want DPS to focus fire targets. It also helps me figure out which mob to target. Sometimes figuring it out is easy. Ex: first mob the tank pulls is usually the main target, or the biggest mob of the group. But sometimes it's not clear. Also, I'm lazy.

I thought I was being helpful by marking targets lol. Basically focusing the damage and burning down the targets ASAP together. But apparently not. I also wouldn't sit there for 10 seconds taking my time to make sure I'd mark targets, I'd mark the first one macro-stylie, and then do more as needed while we fought.

But I guess the general consensus is that I was just wasting my effort.

Ha! I was only pretending to be retarded. But you thought I was actually retarded. Dummies!

Besides tanks easily being able to generate more points of hate than an enemy has HP, you can think of it as Socrates once did:

4 mobs or greater are AOE'd so you shouldn't mark
The first mob doesn't have to be marked because it's the one you shield lob
The last mob doesn't have to be marked because it'll be the last one alive
Marking something with a 2 is stupid
Therefore, if p then q, it follows that nothing should ever be marked

    Logic!

Just keep marking Vaspinne, everyone seems to be forgetting the important fact that most dps in DF are absolute shit, and finding one that knows what they're doing is a miracle, let alone two or more.

From a SMN/SCH perspective, I'll actually focus fire on the highest HP enemy, so that the dots I spread with Bane will tick more time on all mobs. If one dies too soon (damn you melees!) I'm actually losing DPS. So, from a marking tank perspective, I'm always doing it wrong. On the othe hand, when I'm tanking, the first thing after the tomahawk is usually a pair or three overpowers, so I don't really care who my DPS are focusing, I'll be able to hold hate on all of them after that, alternating single target combos (Eye, for damage) and overpower.

Marking some times is useful, usually when there's a new player in the dungeon and you want them to focus on the problematic mob of the pack first (like bees, or stuff that hit unusually hard), but nothing more.

Most of the time in dungeons, you should be doing AOE. If DPS are doing single target attacks, they have enmity bars anyway. I'm actually less likely to attack a marked mob because I know the other PUG DPS is probably going to and my DOTs are going to be wasted.

I feel like this really depends on the job and if you're doing a level 50/60 dungeon as opposed to a level staggered 1->49/51->59 dungeon. Summoner with DOTS, of course. Blm AoE too. But if you're asking me as a Drg to do mostly AoE for an entire dungeon? Fuck no. That'll push my DPS so goddamn low. I mean, yeah, there are situations when it's called for. But again, as a dragoon unless you're doing level 50 or 60 cap dungeons where ilvls allow you to mass pull an entire dungeon and AoE shit down, you should typically be going through your usual rotations for highest DPS output.

I should also mention; my whole "I mark shit as a tank" spiel from earlier, my highest level tank job is a level 28 Marauder. I'm not speed running lvl50/60 dungeons for my daily, just the lower end stuff that typically has newer players or classes that aren't even capable of AoE'ing big groups of mobs anyway. I'm sure it's pretty obvious once you get to the higher levels that marking mobs is unnecessary. I just do it at the lower levels because... well... it's the lower levels lol

Edit: Your "should be doing AoE" comment was probably meant for Taim Meich in regards to talking about Smn DPS specifically. So yeah... if that's the case than just disregard the first bit of what I wrote

Got the "reported" card pulled on me because I asked a shit WAR in The Aery if they had Maim or any button besides Butcher's Block on their hotbar.

This was after Bane ripped every pull pre-2nd boss, from the tank...as a Scholar...

They sounded as retarded as the guy who does the mark 1 Shield Lob macro in the previous page. Was this you?

Whoa now, we wouldn't want to over complicate things for the guy would we?

I joined a FATE party last night and landed in the middle of an argument between 4 DRKs around level 45. Some choice quotes....

"PLD is the block tank, WAR is the evasion tank, and DRK is the parry tank"

"No DRK is the self healer tank"

"Dark Arts + Dark Dance is OP"

"DRK is basically just PLD without a shield"

I basically just sat there and grit my teeth. Nope, not even going to try touching this shit.

I always try my best to let the idiots bicker and not try to enlighten them. Then there are times I give in and just go in circles trying to explain such simple stuff.

I'm currently at work, and I play paladin. Besides, I did learn that macro from the BG pld/tanking thread early on since the only experience I had tanking was back in XI using counterstance on mnk, so I needed all the help I can get to learn tanking while leveling up. I would rather have a quick way to mark a high priority target, using it like an oGCD, than let random dps attack unfocused, allowing less things to beat on me and letting the healer get in on the dps fun too.
