I'm kinda new, not sure how to progress.

Started a couple days ago. Took my time and poked around the quests, towns, jobs, crafts, and everything. I've got a pretty firm grasp on what I'm doing, but I seemed to reach a stopping point in the quests. I just finished the main story line quest that gives me an airship pass, but now there is nothing left to do it seems. I started in Gridania and nobody has any quests. Do I have to finish quests in the other two towns? Do quests stop being the main source of XP? Just kinda at a loss for what to do next to feel like I'm progressing.

you either missed a story quest somewhere or you arent the proper level to continue it. check your quest log, check with mother, or check the waking sands, that should direct you to the next adventure. Story quests dont really slow down until the later levels when you have to fate grind a little more for some extra XP

Fastest xp is fate party's where you go from fate to fate in a zone. Go a little.further and you can unlock the first dungeon in story. While waiting for que to get in dungeon can do a mix of quests and hunting log to solo xp also. But going forward fates are best xp and can spam dungeons for xp.and loot too

For your first character you should be doing quests and story quests and fates on the side. Do dungeons along the way and save up seals to by grand company gear so you can always take the Gil from quests. It all adds up and will give you close to 500k by the time your 50

In terms of the story, I think you finished The Envoy quest for your starting city. The next quest is called Call of Sea which is given to you by a Serpent Officer located at Nophica's Altar in Old Gridania.

I think it's been said before, but judging from where you said you were, you have to do the the instances near each of the major cities.
Check your quest log to see if there is something about using Duty Finder to go in to there or that.

Otherwise, you've been going through your MSQ too quick and are too low level to progress and receive any other quests.
Generally speaking though, your storyline will let you pass most quest hubs in the level range of your story quest.

Now I've gotten my GLD higher than my CNJ by doing dungeon/guildhest runs, some grinding, and off missions in other cities i never visited, and I've been saving story and main quests for my CNJ so that my CNJ and his LNC can stay near the same level. I've tried to do FATEs but there are so many people doing them that I can either not do anything in them because they die too fast, or there are so many things on the screen my computer can't handle it. Is there an alternative leveling I can do? Or am I even looking at this right?

Do fate groups instead of solo. You get all the credit from your group as long as you hit something fate related once.
And if it's the delivery ones, just keep killing stuff and collecting till the 1 min countdown starts, then deliver.

That's the most efficient way to "casually" level without exhausting quests.

TBH I think questing is faster than fates, but unfortunately you can only do quests once, but at least it gets your first character to 50.

Don't agree with the statement about gil rewards. Once in awhile during the higher levels check to see how much gear is generally going for and decide from there.

Just for a recent example, a story mission gave 6 silver pieces (3k gil) as a reward, or some general toadskin armor. Turns out the armor was worth 6k on my server, so I profited quite a bit.

U still gotta clear the MSQ so u might as well do it on ur first class to 50. Grinding fate is good xp but in the end for ur first u still gotta clear the MSQ....might as well put that xp to work.

Second job is going to be faster for a few reasons. One, MSQ gets you through, but you will have to stop from time to time to grind out some levels, this is almost always done via FATEs or dungeons. Dungeons take forever if you're not a tank or healer. Running around doing MSQ also eats up a large amount of time (some MSQs can take 30-60 minutes to complete, and for a not-so-significant reward).

So yes, I think once you have all of that out of the way, a second job can be done in half the time. Or less. My first time through, it took me 5-6 days to level. My second job took me 3. My third, which I'm currently leveling, is at 36 after a day and a half. The difference for me is that I am not getting distracted by side-quests or whatever. I did MSQ on my first, I did quests on my second because I was farming coins at the same time (hey, I needed money), but was still focusing heavily on FATEs. My third has been done exclusively through FATEs, and it is noticeably faster. MSQ is not the fastest way to level, FATEs are. That said, you need to do MSQ anyway, so the first time around is the slowest. Of course, as has been mentioned, getting that first 50 also gives you a pretty big EXP bonus for your next jobs, and it adds up fast as well.

The masses aren't wrong here. You see large numbers of people doing FATEs for a reason.
