    I'm a complete Mathematica n00b. Advise? [Calculus 3 questions]

    My school pretty much lets each individual teacher get shit done how they want. Only problem with that is, there's a different professor for each Calculus at my uni and they are each faggots in their own way. Turns out my current professor is a faggot in the sense that he's giving us Mathematica homework that none of us know the syntax for. The current assignment is sequences and recursive sequences.

    BG Math nerds, how I shot web?

    Spoiler: show

    Searching recursive sequence in mathematica itself has turned up nil, and frankly google hasn't helped much either. Can you point me in the right direction?

    That homework is some major bullshit, are you supposed to learn somethig from this? Besides how to use mathematica

    Mathematica should have some built-in tutorials that cover that kind of stuff somewhere, if I recall.

    Tell me about it. This doucheface even teaches past the allotted class time and just says "you can leave." and you miss important things like... the roll if you leave.

    These are the "tutorials" I have for recursion and graphing on Mathematica for one of my classes:

    http://www.4shared.com/folder/m3Hoyx2O/mathematica.html

    I don't know if it helps but it might be better than nothing.

    What exactly are you having problems with?

    That's appalling. Ask him if you're required to use mathematica for the tests.

    We tested this last week and it was nothing like this. We've completely moved on.

    Fuck this professor, and fuck busy work.

    Proper way to do this assignment is to uninstall Mathematica and use MatLab instead.

    Here are some tutorials myself and my classmates used when we were back in school.

    I used this at Purdue (lol)

    While I got through this shit scraping by my nails with a C-, I'm kind of on the wall about the above homework. Mathematica es cray

    Ok here goes first one:
    Code:
    y[0] = Sqrt[2] - 1;
    z[0] = 6 - 4 Sqrt[2];
    y[k_] := (1 - y[k - 1])/(1 + y[k - 1]);
    z[k_] := z[k - 1] (1 + y[k + 1])^4 - (2^(2 k + 3)) y[
        k + 1] (1 + y[k + 1] + y[k + 1]^2)
    Then press shift+enter for new line then type N[1/z[3],100] and shift enter for the result, all is case-sensitive

    5.- N[Abs[Pi - 1/z[3]], 100]

    Not that it technically matters, with every y[k] being equal to the same value (sqrt(2)-1), but shouldn't the recurrence for z use y[k] instead?

    Code:
    z[k_] := z[k-1](1+y[k])^4-2^(2k+3)y[k](1+y[k]+y[k]^2);
    Also, in MATHEMATICA you can use Control-2 to make a square root operator if you want to make it look nicer.

    Knowing how to use Mathematica is more valuable than say knowing how to use a TI-89 or solve problems by hand. I can't say whether you'll actually take advantage of this knowledge, but there are industry applications for it. I don't actually know how to use it though, sorry.

    With k or k+1 shit literally locked my PC 4 times computed to oblivion. Its been years since I locked a pc with 3 lines of "code"

    Do people in industry actually use Mathematica? I was made to learn Maple when I took calc and have not even heard the software referenced since then. Impressively useless waste of time.

    1 & 2 of the second one:
