Can someone tell me if the version I saw had bad translation or if they changed the origin of Mewtwo in this?

If this is based off the game and not the anime, then that makes more sense then a genetically engineered pokemon that afaik was never alluded to in the original.

No. They messed with a pregnant mew embryo to alter the dna iirc

I suppose, but then it doesn't make any sense for Mewtwo to be 150 and Mew to be 151. I guess it never did to begin with either.

Yeah, the only reason it makes sense is because Mewtwo is actually in the game and Mew wasn't. I wonder what it was like when the game originally came out in Japan, if people knew Mew existed or if there were just a lot of rumors about why 150 was Mewtwo.

in the red/blue game team rocket actually tells you they've created mewtwo so maybe there just adding depth to it instead of cloning/super easy explanation to my ditto's are real

It's translated right.

In the original Red/Blue/Yellow and later FireRed/LeafGreen, the player finds journals in Cinnabar Mansion detailing research on Mew and Mewtwo. Gene recombination experiments were carried out on a pregnant Mew, and Mewtwo was the birthed result.

Yeah, the only reason it makes sense is because Mewtwo is actually in the game and Mew wasn't. I wonder what it was like when the game originally came out in Japan, if people knew Mew existed or if there were just a lot of rumors about why 150 was Mewtwo.

Well, Mew was in the game, just not obtainable through any normal means. There was special, protracted glitch that allowed players to capture it, as well as the official Nintendo events. If I recall, there was almost as much buzz in Japan as to the mystery surrounding Mew as there was here.

Fun fact: Mew was actually the first registered trademark for Game Freak, back in '94 before Pokemon was even a thing. So in a sense, it's the first Pokemon; which makes it even more ridiculous that it came after Mewtwo in the Pokedex.

That's always been in the game. It sounds like the translators even pulled out the exact wording from the game to make it more authentic. Go fire up an old game and go read diaries in the cinnibar mansion.

I actually had a friend trade me Cut so I could skip the SS Anne and not have it sail away. Came back later with Surf and Strength, actually found the rumoured truck, but alas, couldn't move it and get the pokeball with Mew inside from underneath +_+
