If this is how I'm coming across then I apologize for my apparently woefully lacking writing skills. Precedent is never a good excuse for poor behaviour, I agree. I'm just attempting to clarify (for my own understanding and interest) why some comments are fair game and others are no bueno (as far as forum infractions are concerned, anyway. Whether or not they're socially acceptable is another matter). As far as gumming up the hackey thread with this stuff, I apologize but feel like the dialogue is better with more participants, and it's a decision that affects many of the folks here, so I think it behoves everyone to have the chance to participate and to see the thought process behind some of the decisions being made.

I was trying to say the discussion that took place in the football thread and the one currently underway in the blog post comments are a little silly. I can totally see how you might have gotten that impression. I don't think that article is advocating that kind of language. It's addressing the "BUT WHAT ABOUT [stupid term for whites that doesn't actually exclude or dehumanize]" argument that comes up so often that you can almost put up a countdown timer to when it's going to come up in a discussion about racist terminology.

Now I'm going to quote a friend of mine because goddamn there has been some good quotes today:

I think the most irritating thing about that argument is that it even exists. Not to be that preachy guy, but why do people even have to demand or argue about that sort of language to begin with? Regardless of whether it's incredibly offensive, vaguely offensive, not offense to them personally but it ~might~ be offensive to someone else. The English language is huge and there are more then enough ways to express oneself without having to resort to those kinds of things. Common sense should take precedent over what is and isn't allowed and having to either allow everything vs allowing nothing as far as language goes.

I like what I ended up going with but I might do up something like this for the sports forum after people stop setting themselves on fire.

My sister gave me an old 60 inch flat screen where the speakers are blown. Was going to hang it up in the bar in the game room so people could watch the games and fix the speakers. The tiedown clip I used wasn't totally secured. It slipped and the screen hit the corner of my back seat. Get home and turn it on. Spider webs everywhere. I am sad.
