There have been a handful of bizarre scheduling choices to begin the season. Besides the Phx NYR game, Toronto has 4 games in 6 days to begin their schedule, Calgary played their last preseason game 10 days before their season opener, which happened to be in Washington and starting off an east coast road trip.

I think it's mainly due to every team playing a minimum of 2 games against every other team (1 at home, 1 on the road). So teams that normally played 1 game against each other every 2 years suddenly have to visit that team and any other teams in that region at least once a year.
