Jon Lester was dealing in Game 1 of the World Series, but did he have the help of the old Vaseline ball?

That was the suggestion of Cardinals minor league pitcher Tyler Melling, who tweeted screen grabs during Wednesday night’s game (deleted Thursday afternoon) that appear to show a mysterious, translucent blob inside Lester’s glove. A video clip shows the Red Sox left-hander dabbing at the same spot in his glove with two fingers of his pitching hand. Lester threw 7 2/3 shutout innings in the eventual 8-1 victory over the Cardinals.

MLB released a statement in response to the swirl of interest in Lester’s alleged fondness for petroleum jelly:

“We cannot draw any conclusions from this video. There were no complaints from the Cardinals and the umpires never detected anything indicating a foreign substance throughout the game.”

Using an extra aid for grip on cold nights – game-time temperature at Fenway Park was 50 degrees – is not uncommon around the sport. An accusation from the Cardinals would invite scrutiny on their own pitching staff.

“As far as I’m concerned it’s a non-issue,” Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It’s something that arose in social media and not from our players or manager or our coaching staff. To me it does not represent a concern.”

The situation recalls the 2006 World Series, when television cameras spotted a dark splotch that looked like pine tar on Tigers pitcher Kenny Rogers’s hand – but the Tony La Russa-led Cardinals raised no complaints. Lester’s teammate, right-hander Clay Buchholz, was accused earlier this season by Blue Jays broadcasters of spitballing with a foreign substance on his left arm.
