Trademarks applied for. Does that mean the jokes finally stop?
Trademarks hardly mean it is confirmed. Companies trademark things all the time that they never intend on producing, mostly so other people won't get them first. Square has (had? don't know if they expired) several different "Chrono" themed names trademarked for a third Chrono Trigger game that never saw the light of day, for example.
People wont stop until valve announce it

Any idea how much it cost to patent this? Basically how much would it have cost for someone else to have patented it? Or is there some law against that?
Half Life 2: Episode 3 or are they just skipping that and just making it into 3? Probably all the delaaaaaays
The difference between this time and others is there international trademarks they made. Yes, they can file for quite a few extensions, but for the most part they HAVE to do something or show development intent or they can lose the trademark.
What this does is show that they confirm they are going to do something with Half Life 3, within the next 2-3 years. Either start development or are developing.

FAKE: European Half-Life 3/Portal 3 Trademarks Filed
Discussion in 'News' started by Lobster, Tuesday at 8:29 PM.
Update 1:
We can now confirm that the "Half-Life 3" trademark has been removed from the Trademarks and Design Registration Office of the European Union (OHIM) website. The entrant appears to have disappeared entirely after only being listed on the website database for little over a week, allowing us to identify that the trademark's listing was more than likely a hoax intended to generate fake buzz for a game which is unlikely to appear for several years. Returning readers may remember when we had discussed how the "Half-Life 3" listing was previously never officially checked or authenticated before its removal.
On October 2nd 2013, a brand new trademark filing appeared on the same site, this time for "Portal 3", which is listed under the trademark number of "012190286". While this new filing should almost definitely be taken with a rather large pinch of salt, we can confirm that the "Portal 3" listing appears to have been appropriately examined by OHIM, unlike the previously listed "Half-Life 3" trademark. Thanks to the recent sneak peak into Valve's Jira account, we can confirm that there is currently no "Portal 3" development team within the company, highlighting that this brand new listing is also very likely a hoax of some kind, regardless of whether or not it has been officially examined. We'll keep you posted if and when we learn more.
Original Post:
There has been some talk today on the Neogaf forums surrounding Valve's registration of the name "Half-Life 3" as a trademark in Europe on September 29th. No such similar trademark exists in the US Patents and Trademark office. While it is tempting to get excited about such a development, it is worth noting that it is fairly common place for a company to hold onto numerical trademarks and web addresses far ahead of any potential future release in order to prevent complications further down the line. The trademark has yet to be appropriately examined and approved, as shown below.
A quick search of the US Patents and Trademark office shows that Valve already own such names for potential products in the future, including Dota 3, and of course Valve have regularly updated their ownership of the www.half-life3.com domain over the last few years. Please remember that the existence of a trademark such as this has very little to do with the development of any game title, as we imagine this kind of trademark is submitted simply to protect intellectual property, regardless of whether or not a company will ever use said trademark. A recent example of this comes directly from publisher Electronic Arts, who registered domain names for the Battlefield series as far ahead as Battlefield 20!
Until such time as there is an official announcement or direct reference to the upcoming release of a new game or series, it is best to consider all such discoveries as nothing more than rumours.
lol knew it
Counter-Strike creator says HL3 & L4D3 are currently in developmenthttp://www.vg247.com/2014/05/23/half...-le-interview/Half-Life 3 is being worked on as you read this and Left 4 Dead 3 is looking great, according to Counter-Strike co-creator Minh Le. Hot damn.
Speaking of Half-Life, it’s one of eight games Mike Irving included in his list of games he wants to see remastered for next-gen formats. Yes, we’re aware Black Mesa exists, but it’s not out on consoles is it?
The new Valve chatter all went down in this Twitch interview between Le and goRGNtv.
When asked about Half-Life 3, Le replied, “There’s like a laser sight on my head right now! I don’t think I can talk about that, to be honest, but I think it’s kind of public knowledge, that people know that it is being worked on. And so if I were to say that yeah, I’ve seen some images, like some concept art of it, that wouldn’t be big news to be honest.
“But yeah, I mean like I guess I could say that I did see something that looked kinda like in the Half-Life universe. And I mean it wouldn’t surprise anyone if I said they’re doing it, they’re working on it, yeah. So to go on a limb I’d say I did see some concept art for Half-Life 3.
“Somebody’s knocking on my door right now!” he later said. “Hopefully that doesn’t get out. It seems like old news by now, I think everybody knows it’s being worked on.”
On Left 4 Dead 3 Le went on, “I saw it, it looks great. I was really excited when I saw that, I was like ‘wow, this looks great’. Because I really enjoyed Left 4 Dead, it was just one of those games that really just changed the industry. I think at the time there wasn’t many good co-op games, so yeah, this is a great co-op game.”

This thread shouldn't exist until Valve officially announces something.
valve doesn't do 3's
If true, I really hope they do an overhaul of the weapon system in L4D3.
HL3 Should be a space adventure with tons of sci-fi shit with portals and death rays. And by space adventure, I don't mean that sorry excuse for a soap opera called Dead Space.

Danish version pre-order. Still unconfirmed if real.
Two of the early Prototypes were an RTS & an FMV (think Night Trap)
