Really part of smns problem is the general all pets problems on harder content. A lot of which could be solved with pt buffs hitting pets. I mean iirc avatars aren't hit with their own favors

If favor auto capped potency, and didn't reduce avatars stats I'd be happy enough.
Ifrit gives like DA+23%? Ramuh Crit rate+21%? They're not really bad buffs, but I wont complain about a boost. I would love to see the aura applied to the avatar as well though. Crit rate +21% yes please!
If SMN could constantly provide Ifrit or Ramuh's Favor with capped potency while maintaining Crimson/Inferno Howl and swapping to Shiva once in a while for Diamond Storm, they would be comparable/superior to COR as a DD buffer.
Fucking lol@ that guy in the thread that said the Double Attack Favor isn't desirable.
It doesn't even need to auto-cap potency, it just needs for the potency *not* to degrade when you BP. (I mean, obviously, auto-cap would be way better, but I don't have an issue with avatar swapping being disincentivized as long as they don't mandate you stand there doing *nothing*)
this isnt gonna solve anything, your avatar will instantly die in range of anything remotely hard, where it usually has to be when you want to provide your frontline with the buffs. This is the same reason other pet jobs and Geomancer suffer. They need to expand the range on Favor and autocap it or add insane amounts of -DT to avatars, and even then your avatar will most likely eat dirt before reaching the potency cap(without it getting healed), makeing you start all over again.
You mean Ifrit, a fire based avatar which already takes negligible damage from ice sources on top of its innate -50% DT, survived next to the Kamihr boss, whos attacks are all ice based?!?!??! Let me know how Ramuh fares...
Try Yorcia with Ifrit or Ramuh. Eye will use stonega III, the snaptrap does AoE that kills avatars about every 20-30sec, the lesser tree does AoE that kills them in 2 hits. Mandragora and Morta are the only ones that don't destroy the avatars, but mandragora will sleep all but Diabolos (and maybe fenrir, i Forget.) Oh and the boss does AoEs that kill garuda in 2-3 hits, not that her EVD+ aura really matters.
Edit: btw Leviathan with Grand Fall is amazing for the lesser tree. We open with Meteor Strike and have some mage nuke once then use Grand Fall for about 6-8k DMG. The DT will stay down for a large part of the fight. We had one fight where I did Grand Fall then a bit later a DD did a SC that healed it and that kept DT down till like 2-3%
I replied the way I did because of this:
A lot of high end content? So Ifrit being able to survive against one delve boss due to the way it was made constitutes "lots of high end content". Try that against the other 5 delve bosses, against the AA's...avatars will be dead before the buffs hit max potential:
Ark Angel TT: unless you care for Eva or Def boost, they're gonna get Petrified constantly from Amon Drive, so you'll have to keep resummoning anyways.
Ark Angel HM: if you can carefully position it, you can avoid Cross Reaver. If you have 4 melee's, good luck with that.
Ark Angel MR: Havoc Spiral
Ark Angel GK: shouldnt be a problem, it favors spamming Meiyo Shisui, so it doesnt dragonfall as often as it should.
Ark Angel EV: too many AOE moves.
what else?
First of all, if you're using rangers against something, you can just sit your avatar with the rangers and not worry about dying to AoE (Ifrit doesn't do jack for RNG, but you can use Ramuh). So that actually covers a lot of content.
Delve 1.0, all the TP moves get stunned if you're doing it right, and the Bee and Tojil only have conal melee attacks, so you should be able to keep them out there.
Tenzen fight doesn't have AoE if you sleep the Taru, IIRC the fight with the dude that doesn't spam Light Blade (I can never keep their names straight) should be fine...
All in all, probably 50% of content you should be able to keep a (useful) avatar alive for.
This is pretty much what I'm gathering from your post, this is exactly what SMN's want.Originally Posted by Foldypaws
which avatar would benefit Rangers again? ah right only one... ramuh, no shit I can buff rangers too with only one buff on geo, oh wait 2 if I dont have to use a luopan near any kind of hard boss (since they will insta wipe it anyway), and yet in that case you will have to say bye bye to it every few minutes for schero or something else, to make yourself usefull.
Someone just tell SE to give SMNs a JA that, once triggered, gives avatars a good damage reduction at the expense of taking damage also hurting the SMN. Damage taken should likely facilitate needing someone else to heal the SMN so it can't be perverted into SMNs soloing all da things.
I never understood why they didn't solve the pet-dying issue the same way they did in many other MMOs.
Make pet get a very very high -DT for all AoE moves that aren't targeted directly at them.
That probably wouldn't translate very well in all of the possible FFXI situations, but it would sure help a lot with their survivability.
