SE doesn't directly accept paypal, it went through ultimatepay, which from what I'm hearing doesn't work anymore.

This is correct. I am one of the people whose debit card isn't accepted. I tried pre-paid and it did not work. I used PayPal through UltimatePay and now I am screwed. Technically I could buy the FFXIV cards and start playing FFXIV, but getting kicked off the game after 10 years over a technical payment issue handled in the absolute worst manner possible is really off-putting with regards to wanting anything to do with the company ever again. (Well, that and the fact that FFXIV has the crappiest itemization ever...)

Didn't something similar to this happen once before, during the Abyssea era?

SE randomly canceled a bunch of accounts and made it really hard for some people to pay and reactivate them?

Has anyone tried this? I'm not certain if it works for SE's system or not, and it's still not directly accepting Paypal, but I know they were piss easy to get about 2 years ago when I set up the CEO of a company I worked for with one. He was aggravated that orders in the field took time to clear into the account before the funds could be transferred; with this, and some finagling with their account department, proceeds were available immediately. IIRC, it worked exactly like a bank's debit card with no fees or anything. If it worked, it'd sorta solve the complaints about Paypal at least.

Knock on wood, but I've never experienced payment issues with SE. I've used a few different pre-paid cards over the years, as well as 2 different Bank of America credit cards, a Visa credit card, and for the past 1.5ish years a small town bank's debit card. Sucks to see people having issues, but can't really relate with em.

Around the whole time verified by visa kicked off, and if your card wasn't with Chase you were pretty much screwed at the time. Around that time they introduced crysta which was the work around for it and it worked great if you could get around that horrible third party website they had used located somewhere in Europe that charged you $5 per transaction.

Yes, and it was apparently never resolved for some people, they just used ultimatepay/whatever the other thing was as indefinite workarounds.

Besides the fact that some people don't want one, having a credit card doesnt guarantee immunity to the error. Besides that, shouldn't need a credit card to play a game that has been paid for with little to no issues for over 11 years. Basic payment options being unavailable or nonfunctional in the year 2014 is inexcusable.

Paypal as well, it's stupid that there's only one payment option in 2014/15. Thankfully FFXIV has gamecard options but FFXI does not. They also use some kind of stupid system that locks your card or account for 24h each time you get an error and they add up.

Meanwhile, I'm personally annoyed that so many organizations enjoy receiving strictly PayPal as a method of payment. Then again, I'm the sort of person who actually zeros out their account and changes banks when they're not being treated well. I much prefer credit cards. Online, there has been an unfortunately large amount of cases wherein I wouldn't buy something due to PayPal being the only payment option available. In a worst-case scenario, I would rather deal with my credit card provider's fraud department than PayPal's any day of the week.

Options, however, I'm fine with. So long as some combination of credit cards, checking accounts, and transfer services are allowed, everyone should be fine. It's exclusivity that grinds my gears.

Doesn't change anything. The 401 shit can happen for no reason with any method. Experienced it first when they removed the paypal option I've always used since they took it off pol. Now I don't know what lenght has the block I received and I'm afraid to try again for that. Which is another bs, being unable to know the status of your accout.

its not hard to get a credit card. i live in switzerland and have 2. however as byrth mentioned pre abyssea one of my cards wasnt accepted anymore by SE for whatever reason and the 2. still is ok to be used for 11. the one that works for 11 is the one that has an extra security layer for online stuff. might just be a coincidence but i think this has something to do with it. i had to do an online verification with my CC provider for onlinestuff s couple years ago (was pre abyessea).

It's 24h for each error you get but yeah, there's no way to officially confirm how long it is. Maybe if you contact Support they can tell you.

As a payment service, Paypal can be set up to accept credit cards too. Given that the problems a lot of people are having seem to stem from overzealous fraud protection on the part of Global Collect, who are (currently), the only actual payment option, it'd be a great alternative that would also accommodate those who don't have a credit card.

When my alt account got error 401'ed (card on it got cancelled prematurely, and the charge failed), I couldn't use a different card, and I couldn't buy Crysta to reactivate it either because it all goes back to Global Collect for payment. Test charges worked fine, but they'd put a block on the account preventing the real payments from going through. There's an initial 24-hour block for a failed payment, and additional attempts extend it, despite none of that being communicated to the customer.

While it eventually did clear out and let me reactivate, a completely alternate payment method would have let me do that a week or so earlier. Paypal seems like it'd be a pretty solid option to fill that role, since it does at least tend to work.

As far as I can tell, the block on cards is completely arbitrary. A few months ago I had to get a new debit card from my bank. The only thing that changed was the card number. The account information, security settings, billing address, etc all remained exactly the same. The bank even knew the charge from SE would be coming (one of my very few recurring payments) and pre-approved it. SE denied it.

Not only was it denied, my first two attempts to contact SE customer support told me that I simply needed to go to mogstation to update my payment info for FFXIV. I tried a third time and kindly told them to respond with FFXI related help or to not reply at all. The third reply stated that it was clearly an issue with my bank, and not SE's system.

In the end I said screw it. It's not worth that much hassle and stress trying to pay for something I'd already been paying for with no issues. I know several people that have stopped playing due to this, it's quite ridiculous.

I got fucked over big time when they stopped accepting cards from different regions. I have a JP account so my only option is crysta now. I have to buy overpriced webmoney and use that to buy crysta, costs me about 20$ (+- 3$) a month for my character.

Thing that really pisses me off is when they released the security token I had to link my account, about a year later they decided that if you haven't yet linked your account you could do a one time region switch. Fuck you SE.
