In an age where relics weren't 50c on a street corner and it took quite a lot of effort to get comparable weapons, it was quite nice to have the option. byakko's haidate, a.hands, and w.legs were the only truly irreplaceable pieces of gear that came out of sky. abjuration gear such as w.hands, d.legs, n.body, things like osode too, were mostly sidegrades similar to the weapons from WtB unless HQ'd or in specific circumstances, though w.hands may have not had an alternative until later. the differences really aren't as vast as you're making them out to be; both took a lot of time to get what you want, sky's only real advantages coming from some of the most sought after/rarest drops in the entire event that often had you sitting on a mile long waiting list and hoping that they'd drop after the millionth kill.

the disparity in time investment makes up for the difference in drop volume per kill; an efficient group could likely clear waking the beast within 4~5 hours without having to worry about being outclaimed on zipacna or not getting despot to spawn for your group or somesuch. sky had those issues, and thus often resulted in a higher average time investment by a significant margin while still possessing the ability to fuck you over with double d.feet or some shit.

Does it? The one time I did waking the beast we got zero weapon drops.

also keep in mind, waking the beast was a weekly event; so you weren't forfeiting other events every single day of the week to do it

Except if you did it in one shot was a 4+hr event. City/northland dynamis was 3 1/2, and people hated it.

You can start at 5pst, but thats 8 est and runs past midnight est, which wasnt really fair for people who had to be up at 630-7 the next day. you can start at 6 est, which is 3 pst and the west coasters arent home yet (hell 5 pst is cuttin it). You can split it into 2 days, and someone misses one day, and theyre fucked.

And yet they still did it \o/

dynamis was probably the worst offender of them all in terms of effort:reward if you were particularly unlucky or had a lot of RDMs, PLDs, whatevers in your LS, and/or didn't have LS payouts

You'd figure something that requires that level of time investment from an alliance would have some guaranteed drops, like those other events you're comparing it too. There's a reason almost no one did these fights.

Large group requirement + huge time investment + poor drop rates + only two (marginally) useful drops for the entire alliance to fight over on the offchance they drop... yeah.

They is not very many thou, it was not a popular event to say the least. Even for the people that wanted to do the event, organizing it proved to be impossible more often than not.

The only point I'll agree with you on when comparing the event to others, which were all massive time vampires for a chance at actually receiving something that anybody wants, is the amount of worthwhile drops from it. Ifrit's Bow, Shiva's Shotel, and Leviathan's Couse are the only ones off the top of my head that were actually good. The Pole was nice too, but no one used staff back then. Gloves were alright as well, but were barely worth inventory.

Anyway, the thread has been derailed long enough, so I'm about done attempting to defend outdated endgame events, feel free to get in another post after but I'm not gonna reply. In the end, I'd love to see a revised version of Waking the Beast with new avatar themed armor/weapons.

I don't know about anyone else but I never had an ls do waking the beast. The 3 times I attempted it back at 75 were from some shouts which took hours to fill and were sterotypically filled with people that would take a good hour or more between each and every kill with people of course quitting midway thru. They took more like 8 hours just from the time we started to roll out to finish. Got 2 kills and 1 midway thru quit and ended up with all told between the entire alliances 2 cuffs a cudgel and a polearm. Doesn't really compare to even the worst dynamis runs

I've cleared the Waking the Beast fights maybe 3 times in total.. attempted, even more, considering we would wipe in the final BC. The time:effort ratio definitely was a bit screwy. You had 6 BCs which dropped nothing.. altho they were arguably pretty easy (but took up time nonetheless), and then 1 final fight which could again drop nothing.. but if you were lucky, get 1-2 weapon drops.. to be divvied up among what was likely a full alliance. The whole chance of a chance of a chance thing was utter bullshit, and has flourished in FFXI for longer than I'd have preferred. But i think WtG's drop rate is exaggerated, since most people only did it like once or twice. Can't really figure out a droprate distribution with that few attempts.

However, I think the devs realize this.. and this is why with the new SKC battlefields that drop the Rem stuff, each person has an individual guaranteed pool. (I'm not so sure about SKC10s tho, never done.. but Skirmish is also similar). This is to say, provided the battlefield has something that is supposedly the common motivating drop, there will likely be an individual drop slot of that nature. If they did Waking the Beast again, perhaps each person would get 1 random weapon, and then there'd be like 1 in the pool, or something.. or at the very least you'd have a whole bunch of weapons drop, instead of any drop pool having 0 as a variable. Having some drop certainty helps.

Would've been far better if each avatar in the BCNM just dropped their weapon

Material Usage License made me lol. I don't get why they're so strict about this sort of thing, were they having a problem with people streaming XI or recording videos that maybe a couple dozen people watch?

    When showing gameplay, you may not replace the FFXI music with third party music;
Haven't heard guidelines like that for any other game, online or not. Really a big deal either IMO, if someone wanted the music ripping a youtube video would be one of my last choices because the sound quality would be ass. Although I'm thankful for this specific one because it saves us from people who think they're being clever when they do another killfest video set to Bodies.

Of course when other companies are denying having any part in this YouTube stuff SE flat out admits they want all the monies and dont care if stuff is monetised or not.
No mashups, mashups get people interested and hyped.
    (ie BG vids)

    edit:
    I know, I can't read.
FINAL FANTASY XI © 2002-2013 SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. All Rights Reserved.
    ...
You may add your own voice-over, and you may edit, combine, mash-up, mix and match the Materials with other FFXI Materials
At the very least, we all know now what we can and can't do. Even though everyone kinda knew already.

I mean those rules basically mean that things like music videos using character models and other fun stuff people have done before (I'm sure you can think of many) technically arn't allowed. That just makes no sense to me, it's a big part of the community just having fun. They're only allowing raw footage of the game with, at most, cutting for time and narration.

Maybe someone recently threatened a suit, and they're trying to cover their ass? Either that or this really has more to do with that FFXIV Free Company video contest.

It has nothing to do with SE in particular at all, they just made a quick written stance on youtubes new automated content destroying system and the shitstorm surrounding it.
