I too hope for a return to this system of gameplay in XI.
Mefuki's video link says it very well.. incomparables add depth to the game for sure, but even incomparables do face a very slight power creep, especially since most of the new unique stats have numeric modifiers.. that being said, FFXI was able to maintain such a situation from 2004-2010, which is basically the entire length of time when the level cap was 75. And they knew exactly how to do this because they were constantly changing up gear stats - job specific stats, latent effects, hiddens, enchantments, set bonuses, pulse, and to some extent augments...
I feel that the developers faced a dilemma in the sense that they wanted (had) to stay at lv99 but still introduce something that would prove challenging to high level players. unfortunately with the ilevel concept they instead introduced the problem of the vast difference between players of the very same level - resulting in the ilvl gear chase. there's good and bad.. since the gear chase meant that people would want to do new content. but also that if the difference was so huge it obsoleted all the gear.
