What I can't understand is why they're doing these free login periods after each update to rhapsodies. It feels like they want to give people incentives not to subscribe.

One of those free periods made me resubsribe after first rhapsodies (quit a couple of months after SoA launch) but people that do not play will not always notice that stuff, so doing them from time to time seems like a good idea to try to hook more people in. 2 weeks is not that much.

Damn so it was the jps that reminded SE of Hi-Freq. Field.... like as soon as they announced infrasonics I was like I hope no one says anything about Hi-Freq. Field

So wait, they're adding new things to Green Mog Pells but not sending any out?

I guess it's a good thing I'm a fucking hoarder and kept all of mine. I wonder what the new items will be.

I would assume it's more that they just didn't announce those yet, maybe saving it for update or post update. Announcing the Red Mog Pells early makes sense, since people would need to have subscribed/stayed subscribed, but otherwise non-update stuff hasn't really been disclosed yet. Maybe they'll slow down the other campaigns with all the Rhapsodies KIs, but usually the return home campaigns have had those. Other times they've handed out Red Mog Pells, they've done Green too - or maybe it'll be a Login Point item, as we haven't seen that list yet either.

New green pell items are likely just recent login points novelty items like excalipoor, cait sith cap/shield, etc.

I can't really agree in large part because we shouldn't expect newer/harder content after the fact to really put such things to the test. I guess the irony is such things would make everything prior easier, which is something I see people here bitching about (in part with gear antiquation).

One of the more realistic issues is SE dropping the ball in making it difficult for people to help others. This manifests in Unity and Escha by forcing more than just the popper to have some form of currency/pop item. This basically introduces the complication of what incentive there is for people done with a piece of content to backtrack and help out. We see this to a lesser degree with WKRs, too, where they can be some good gear sources for up and coming players, but it's something you probably can't expect a small handful of folks to tackle in a reasonable time frame. Plus the cost without a campaign going can be questionable for those still in the formative stages.

I guess we all might have our own ideas about what would inspire longevity, but I think it might be foolish to expect whatever SE pulls out at the last to "force" people to play for a year or more. I know the hardcore really don't care for anyone outside their little circles, but some massive "goal" at the end just tells me you'll see more people abandon ship than ride it out. Of course, if the game goes F2P at some point in the future, I imagine you'd see a brief resurgence.

    Not sure about this.
For the type of player we see around here on BG sure, that would totally work to give them a long term timesink.
But what % of the playerbase do players like these really represent?

In the past I would have said a negligible minority, so small that it wouldn't change anything in the grand scheme of things.
These days maybe it's not such a minority anymore probably, but either way I doubt that would be particularly effective in the end.

I mean, from the way they behaved with the currently existing RME it's quite obvious they wanted RME to lose relevance compared to other options, if they really wanted they could release an ilevel 120 update just for RME weapons, but instead we're here with the current balancing where RME are barely better than other options. It's actually the other way around, more often than not "normal" weapons are on par/better than RME, with a few exceptions still being better (and often the gap is really small).

I could be totally wrong with this, cuz we have zero information, but here is what I have discerned so far from what SE has chosen to do.

They're upping abjuration gear, the gear that was originally intended to be the strongest and rarest (cursed! Ooo spooky). They're doing Escha zitah and sky. Zitah is really as close as they could get to a relevant old HNM zone aside from like Valley of sorrows, but that's barely a zone. Sky was their biggest and most lasting endgame besides HNM really.

This coupled with seeing shit like bringing wyrm fights back in Escha (from trailer) and other small changes make me (want to) believe that the devs want this game going out as a shiny, updated version of their original vision. If this is even a stone's throw from reality, I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to look forward to a buff that makes rme the best again, maybe at the very end with ridiculous conditions. The final weapons for the people who stuck it out. Etc etc.

Take none of this as fact. This is just how I'd been thinking since they talked about upping abjuration gear, bolstered by Escha-Ru'Aun. If I was a game dev this is how I would want my game to go out. The same way it would have had it flopped in the beginning. 15 years later getting to end it with a nice polish on the original vision? Yeah that's how I would do it tbh.

I'm still curious as to what they mean with the hexed update. They used the word "hexed" and we all assumed Legion/VW stuff, but in japanese it's the same word for both Hexed and Cursed.
It could be Sky/Kings Abjurations gear, it could be both. It could require the original gear, it could be completely independent. It could have updated stats (with ilevel vomit), it could simply be same model with completely different stats.
I mean, the way they worded the english description hints at an update, but it's so vague...

About the rest of what you said, I'm not ruling out an update to RME or a final line of "ultimate weapons". It would actually be cool if you ask me. But it wouldn't be so simple. For many of these weapons their "strength" lies in their special effects, not just in the sheer power of their damage potential. It's a bit more complex to update stuff like that.
I also totally don't see them releasing something with "ridiculous conditions".
It would be completely against the direction they've been moving on the past 2 years, it would be such a huge steer in the opposite direction that I really see it extremely unlikely. This, in addition to the fact that I don't really see them spending time and resources to please what's likely an incredibly small part of the player base (the hardcore players).

maybe instead of uping RME weapons they just let you combine them all together? Something like:
Combine Excalibur, Tizona and Almace with an additional content/quest.

    (Insert legendary name for Sword)
DMG: 121 (from excalibur) Delay: 223 (Almace)
DEX +20 (Almace) Attack +40 (from excalibur) M.acc +25 (Tizona) MAB +25 (new stat)
    Magic Damage +150 (new stat)
Sword Skill +242 Parry skill +242 Magic Accuracy skill +228 (Tizona)
"Occ. converts damage dealt to MP V" (Tizona)
"Occ. deals double Damage" (Almace aftermath 3)
    "Damage varies with HP" (Excalibur)
"Regen +10" (relic aftermath as fixed stat)
    Aftermath: "Increases Acc. & M.acc" 100TP /"Occasionally attack twice or thrice" 200TP /"Unbridled Wisdom" 300 TP
    BLU

Aftermath is activated by useing either of the 3 legendary weaponskills Knights of Round, CDC or Expiacion.

or SCH Claustrum + Hvergelmir + Tupsimati
    (insert legendary Staff name)
Dmg: 202 (Claustrum) Deleay: 390 (Hvergelmir)
    MP +150 (Hvergelmir) Accuracy +40 (Claustrum) M.acc +30 (Tupsi) MAB +40 (Tupsi)
INT +20 (new Stat) Occult Acumen +40 (new Stat)
    Magic Damage +248
Staff skill +242 Parry skill +242 Magic accuracy Skill +255
"Same elemental as magic weather: Enmity -20"
"Occasionally deal double magic Damage" (Empy aftermath 3 rate, just not physical)
"Refresh +8" (relic aftermath as fixed stat)
    Aftermath: "Increases M.acc & MAB" 100 TP / "Occasionally quickens Magic Casting" 200TP / "Tabula Rasa" 300TP

or WHM Yagrush + mjollnir + Gambantein
    (insert legendary Staff name)
Dmg: 160 (Mjollnir) Deleay: 300 (Gmbantein)
    HP+90 MP+90 (Gambantein) Attack +40 (Mjollnir) M.acc +25 (yagrush)
MND +20 (new Stat) Convert 5% of "Cure" amount into TP (new stat)
    Magic Damage +155
Club skill +242 Parry skill +242 Magic accuracy Skill +228
    "Enhances Divine Veil effect"
    "Enhances Divine Benison effect III"
"Occasionally deal double magic damage" (empy aftermath 3 rate)
"Accuracy +20" (relic aftermath as fixed stat)
    Aftermath: "Increases M.acc & MAB" 100 TP / "Occasionally quickens Magic Casting" 200TP / "Asylum" 300TP

durations of aftermath is 3 min respectivly (also for 2 hour aftermaths), the SP icon is an aftermath icon and will wear off if changing weapons. aftermath cant be overwritten by lower tier aftermath.
this is a long stretch and the weapons are way OP but i would dig this ¬.¬ and it wouldnt render dynamis currency / alexandrite / HMP useless

Shields are excluded from combination, same applies to gjallar/daurd.

Not sure requiring a job to farm a weapon they can't even equip makes a lot of sense
And again, I see it more complex to do it for weapons where the potential lies in special effects and not in the damage potential.
    Aegis/Ochain, Gjallarhorn/Daurdabla and so on.

Would be very cool! But do you see it happening?

well lvling up a job to 99 isnt hard so that requirement is kinda sol and for the trials to lvl 99 you dont need omfg uber gear. most of the steps can be done without haveing the job even lvld (ecxept for kill trials). on the other side you get the bonus of haveying 1-2 new WSs on the job that couldnt equip some of the relics/empys
