I'd rather have them optimize the netcode (rewriting it from zero) to better address the communication from client to client passing through server.
That way even the graphic engine would become much less random and more useable and they could unlock framerate and drawdistance, for instance.
Also they could transport some of the additional effects developed for the X360 version over to the PC version (water effects and pseudo-bump mapping, they're both much better in the X360 version, in spite of the terrible framerate)
If they don't fix the code underneath these changes are unrealistic though. Even with my PC (1 year old, but still a pretty tough one) I have issues keeping 60fps capped framerate (with the uncapper) when I go with 2x Oversampling and there are 20+ people on screen all using special effects.
I think in those crowded situations sometimes it even goes under 29fps tbh
This is unreasonable for a game this old, and the real culprit here is imho PSTN-focused netcode.
The client-server-client trasmit too many information? Too many packets? Uncripted way? I'm no expert I dunno, but it's clear it's something about this that generates the lag and slow response of the game (and slowdowns) in those crowded situations.
Take another recent game with thousands better graphic and load more stuff happening on screen, but that in spite of that handles it all in a much smoothier way that a 12years old game.
Of course I'm just saying in general, I'm not expecting them to rewrite fundamental parts of the FFXI code.
@Malithar
Then that's probably where my "dream" came from.
I still don't get completely why you think it's not gonna happen.
I mean, would it be so strange to make basic TH stack somehow with your mainhand weapon and remove the TH+ stat from all the other items in-game? Not like there's many anyway, wouldn't take them much.
That way THF would have the freedom to equip whatever the fuck they want to equip, and devs wouldn't have to bother to upgrade items or release new ones to cope with the (rightful) players' anger concerning TH.
I mean, it would be a problem solved for the players and for them, it's win-win, why wouldn't they want to go that way? Are you implying there could be negative consequences? Something they're afraid of?
But what? I can't see it.
