I mean, I'm not a business major but if the NBA is a private organization with its own board of governors (the owners), it's entirely within its rights to vote out one of its board members (Sterling) for any reason it wants, or just for kicks if it wanted. The only reason people have to be upset about this is if they agree with Sterling's opinions and feel persecuted via proxy.

In an ideal world, this decision would have been driven entirely by outrage at his comments. But realistically, this was driven half by outrage, and half by the business side -- and I feel that's a very generous split. You're free to say and think whatever you want, but when those comments make it out into the public, they can have effects and there can be consequences. And in this case, his comments hurt the image of the NBA, and so that's why he's going to lose his team.

Sterling is a horrible person. However all the commentators here are so short sided. If you can be fired and castigated for private opinions what comes next? If you have unpopular political views are you out? If you are part of a religion that is unpopular? No one thinks in the long term anymore.

Not saying I agree with Sterling but America needs to change the first amendment from freedom of speech to freedom of speech as long as it conforms to what we want it to conform to. I wonder when the commissioner is going to ban Larry Johnson for his all black basketball league racist comments.

I completely agree with the ban and fine. However, what about Larry Johnson's comments that black players should form their own league? Is that not just as racist? What do you think would happen if a white player said that? For decades people have fought, and sometimes died, to end segregation and now it seems some of those very same people want nothing more than to go back to segregation. Food for thought....

Doesn't banning someone for their beliefs go against everything America stands for? As bad as Sterling's comments were, technically it isn't a crime to be racist. Plus it wasn't even a public statement he made, he was being secretly recorded. I'm sure other owners/players/coaches have said horrible things similar to Sterling in private, the only difference being Sterling was being recorded without his knowledge. If anything, what Larry Johnson said was 100x worse than Sterling. But I have no problems not having to see or hear about this dude ever again.

It’s the players right to put principles and their objection to racism over the almighty dollar. Principles and rights no one feels the courage to exercise.
