Marketing-wise the lakers had to do what they had to do. Dunno if they offered that much first or he asked for it tho. I know he said “For me to sit here and say, ‘Oh yeah, I’m just going to take a huge pay cut. Nah, I’m going to try to get as much as I possibly can.” months ago. In hindsight it's cheaper than the 30m he's getting paid now.

His deal isn't even close to the max allowed. Kobe is still is functioning under the 1999-2005 CBA. The same rules don't apply to him. He made 30m + last year and was eligible for something like a 17.5% raise if he wanted.

This was a panic signing by Jim Buss though, since he lost Dwight.

If he took a paycut to 15m lets say, they could sign 1 more max deal like they can now, and have alot more space to get other players around them, or using that space to also try and keep Gasol around since with this it doesn't seem like he's gonna stay unless he takes a paycut. It'd make the most sense, you need to build a team that can beat the Spurs/Thunder/Clippers/Rockets, and Golden State if Curry doesnt get injured. 10m would be even better, Kobe is making tons with his name and brand and a 6th ring would cement him at MJ status.

He says he wants to win but it seems he just wants the money at this point. Which is fine and there's nothing wrong with that, but unless the Lakers make some fantastic moves to free up space(like getting rid of that Nash contract) this is so bad.

Nash will retire for sure. BTW, Duncan took a huge pay cut to help the Spurs. He said he was ok with it since he has more money than he could spend. That was also before he divorced his wife. LOL

1. There isn't a hard Salary cap in the NBA. If the lakers want they can sign whoever they want.

2. Blaming a player for taking money is pretty fucking dumb. Comparing Tim Duncan to Kobe is equally dumb considering its to different situations. Tim Duncan is basically Option 2b on a decent team and he knows it. Kobe on the other hand when Healthy can still take over games by himself and more often than not does take over.

3. Theres zero chance Melo or Lebron are leaving the heat/knicks so theres basically no one worth a max deal.

Lebron I think is about 99% staying in Miami. There is a tiny chance he can go back to the Cavs but that's about it.

It's what a 2 year contract? The point isn't that this Lakers team couldn't, but that by taking the money, he's reducing the chances that they will be able to build a team over the next two years. And I don't think anyone is really faulting him. It's just that it feels like he had 2 choices -- guaranteed money, or a chance (perhaps slim, perhaps not slim) at another ring. He took the guaranteed one.
