In the NBA, it's nearly always true that you cannot win a title without a top-10 player - Lebron, Kobe, Shaq, Wade, Garnett/Pierce, Dirk, etc. Even when the Pistons won in 2004 Chauncey Billips was 8th in the NBA in win shares.

The Spurs didn't have a top-15 PER player or a top-20 player in win shares. I would say that is the result of the Spurs coaching and utilizing players where they have best chance to succeed. When you have offensive and defensive systems that operate so well, each individual player is going to perform at their best when thrown in since you know the other 4 are doing the same.

Shaq was definitely the MVP of his first three championships, but I doubt the Lakers would have completed that threepeat without Kobe either. By 01-02 and the 02-03 campaigns he was a bonafide star on his own and he arguably outplayed his contract.

Also the year Kobe won MVP was definitely not his best season but they probably felt they had to give it to him before his athleticism left him.
